Last weekend, I hit my favourite spot on the Pine for a spot of whiting fishing. I kept on getting little winter whiting, too small to bother keeping.
After a while, I got the idea that they might make good livies and threw one out with a 3/0 through the upper lip. A few minutes later, the rod it's on jiggles a bit but no run. I check the drag and it's loose as. I leave it a bit longer then reel it in. All I get back is a head. Neatly bitten off, just behind the gills.
This happened no less than three times.
So two questions:
- any idea what would do this?
- is there a better hook placement than through the upper lip? I was thinking maybe a two hook rig with one through the back and another snooded and through the lip.
Anything toothy enough clean bite thru a whiting with only a rattle, will probably bite off a mono trace on the snooded hook, I'm thinking Tailor or small noah here....
Therefore I'd be inclined to hook the fish throgh the back just behind the dorsal fin, also increases the chance of a jewie as they prefer to take a livie head first.....just my thoughts
Mate i have had that same experience hundreds of times in the gold coast canals. We like to put just legal whiting - 25cm size out looking for big flathead. I recon they are small/big bream just bumping the guts out of the whiting. Things like tailor etc will not make the rod jiggle - they will just take it and make the line run from the rod.
Cheers Fritzy
From when I used to live in the area, it is now the season for bronze whalers, thousands of them! esp in deception bay but all around the region where whiting school in that coloured water and mud bottom so typical down there.
Throw out a whiting pinned to some ganged hooks and let it follow your drifting boat at any depth, yee - ha! a fun fight sooner rather than later.
Most if not all from memory are females and heavy with young. They eat like crap. cheers fnq
