Is there a reef fish closure at fraser

    Gday all
I am heading up to fraser island for a week 28 October - 5 November.
I am taking my 4.55m tinny and i am wondering if there is a closed spauning season for the reefies up there?
I have been reading the posts on fraser lately and they have given me a lot of info on getting there but not much on the offshore fishing up that way.
Any info on this or any general fishing info would be great!

    Thanks in advance
    Anyfish

As far as I am aware
The spawning closures are only for the great barrier reef marine park area.
Unless that has been changed very recently.

    Coral reef fin fish
Three, nine-day periods have been implemented as closed seasons to the taking of all coral reef fish in October, November and December each year around the new moon period. The closures are designed to protect spawning aggregations of most coral reef fish species.

For the closures for waters east of Cape York between 10°41’ south (near Cape York) and 24°50' south will be:

The closures for 2005 will be:

    27 September to 5 October;

27 October to 4 November; and

    25 November to 3 December.

The 24.50.000 is just south of Rooney's point on Fraser Island inside, and just North of Ngkala Rocks on the East side of Fraser.

It also includes the 4 mile reef which is Sth of Elliot Heads and North of Burrum Heads on the mainland.

all this can be found on the web,

Re: Is there a reef fish closure at fraser

Thanks for the detailed info phill

Does that leave much good ground to fish within 10-15nm of waddy point?

Also the last time we were up there the gutter at waddy wasn't verry deep and there wasn't an outer sand bank showing. This made putting the boat in a bit dificult. Does the gutter and outer sand bank move much or will it still be difficult to put the boat in this trip?

    Thanks again

Re: Is there a reef fish closure at fraser

10 -15nm from Waddy should not be a problem.

Most of the ground you will be fishing will be east, nth/ east of Waddy and only 10-15 K's from shore. Depending on your boat and knowledge.

The gutter is not normally a problem, my suggestion is to launch and retrieve at mid tide.

When the tide is high, it covers the back bank thus letting the swell reach the beach ( little rhyme there ! ).

The gutter, in all the years I have fished Waddy / Fraser, has only moved a little sth to the rocks. This was not a problem for larger boats either, but the smaller tinnies needed to be vigilant and get the pedal to the metal real quick along the face of the waves / swells.

    Here's a tip:-

    24.56.554 153.28.645

This is a good starting point. Travel nth and sth along this line, and also east and west within 5k's. Look for rises, as there is usually no bumps and lumps. Fish even sometimes do not show on sounder. (Hey Tony, bloody Trout )

Live bait can be gathered from just off the beach in front of the Rangers house. Look for the dark shadows in the water, this is coffee rock. Bait holds here in good supply.

    Good Luck

    Cheers Phill

Re: Is there a reef fish closure at fraser

Thanks for the offer Tony, but dealing with the general public ( and in particular, southern Tourists ( no offence to anyone here )), is something that takes a special..................courage, demeaner and understanding.

Those attributes are placed in the " deleted file ' for me. !

See you soon ! Jack Attack / Mack Attack ! Bring it on !
