dfox, wats the green ones name? are they just called green crays??
Hey, just wondering what depths you guys go down to get your crays? We normally gotta go at least 8m where we normally go, sometimes in some areas up to 15m. Neways just interested
Cheers Mick

I want this post shut down and Dave banned for two months for the despicable action of posting pics of bloody massive crayfish
I will pay them Dave - those top two were unbelievable specimens. I think the biggest I've seen is a stuffed shell with a plaque that said it went nearly 12lbp.
Sandy .. don't worry too much I'm pretty harmless - UNLESS YOU POST PICS OF CRAYS !!!!!!!
However everything can be fixed with 70 percent of the catch dropped into my house in Brisbane
Tassie is looking extreme doubt for Jan/Feb now![]()
If you are desparate Bugman, there is always Devoceans pet cray......I'm sure he has fed it enough, but probably become too attached....
Dan guards that cray 24 hours a day. He will love , care and cherrish it until the day he puts 7mm of sharpened steel through its head.
thanks Mick - why does having long feelers prevent them from going into a pot - anyone know the answr?
thanks
How do you guys catch crays? Are you allowed to use spearguns? In Tassie you can only use your gloved hand. How do you check if they are legal size before you put a hole in them? Does anyone use a noose? Are they effective or a bit of a hassle.
Bugman - that photo is amazing, what more amazing is that you took the time to take it and you had steady hands while looking into the best cray hole I've ever seen.
Back to why we can not pot the crays in Qld! I was under the impression that they are vegans opposed to the Tassie crays! Not sure about the feelers but i guess its a good a reason than any.I know when i dived for them in PNG the feelers are what you see first grab m and stab m stop the noahs coming in for the charge.
Tassie,
We can use spears in QLD - hand or gun to catch crays. We can't use mechanical breathing apparatus which is a bummer. It's an interesting point as to how you measure a cray before you but a bit of steel in it. The short answer is guesswork and I'm sure there are some people who don't even do that.
Qld coral crayfish are certainly not as prevelant as the Southern Rock Lobster and therefore not many people chase them.
As for my photo - that's only the outer edge of the hole. The entire hole held well over 100 crays but was too long and skinny for me to get into - even with taking my tank off and trying to squeeze in. I've never seen anything like it. There was 9 of us on the trip and it's fair to say we got our bag limit in a couple of days.
Oh by the way - it's in Tassie but it's a secret![]()

Foxy and Bugman, sensational pics - got the drool flowing.
Sandgrouper, that green crayfish is the ornate cray (Panulirus ornatus)
As for the diet of crayfish in Qld, the ornate one at least eats mussels mostly. I was also wondering why they aren't caught in pots, and the antennae size seems as reasonable an answer as any.
All crays eat meat, look up their stats and you'll find they all eat meat. Because there feelers are too long they just don't pot, other crays have smaller feelers so maybe it makes it easier for them to get in. Neways
