Thread: BAG LIMIT OF 30 FISH??? IS THIS RIGHT??

Sorry to add to the confusion Shane but just a reply to Phil,

    Phil,

Actually a possible scenario of me fishing of the Sunshine Coast could see me come home with 1000+ fish. On many many species that are caught offshore there are no bag limits. That will change very soon but at the moment for those unregulated fish their is no limit.

Again check the regulations for regulated fish.

You ! well, we'll see. I haven't seen a report from you with anywhere near a bag limit. ( snapper and pearlie do not count )

And yes, 1,000 is possible, but I was being realistic

and get back to work ya bugga !

Here's a pop quiz. How many Large mouth Nannygai can you catch, per person. How many small mouth?
I know the answer but the DPI website is a bit misleading (hint)

OK, I'm a bit tired today and perhaps I'm not quite with it but, despite having a valid point Phil, I think that your post sounded a bit admonishing. Yes there is a wealth of info at the DPI web site and in publications, but they're still not in print btw and won't be for another 3 weeks I was told this morning. Saying that, that isn't the point I'd like to make.

Part of the "charm" of this site is that members seem free to ask questions and garner knowledge from others here. This site is not neccessarily a 'supplement" to the wealth of knowledge on the web, but may well be the primary source of knowledge for those not *too* familiar with search engines and the like.

If someone can feel free to ask questions about for eg, trailer bearings, then why not about fish regs without a response such as, " am still amazed that people are still asking this question"

Perhaps I'm just a mite bit touchy today but I have to say that if I was a newbie and was met with that response then I would think twice about asking a further questions.

I'll apologise in advance if I am reading too much between the lines here, but I really do think that a link to the DPI site would have been much "gentler" than your first two paras. As for the "taking the easy way out" bit, I would hate to think that we would all have to stop, pause, and think, "wait a minute, I better not post this until I spend an hour or so googling, they may just think I'm a lazy bastard". This site is a research tool also.

    cheers

Got that bit right phill, now what about if you were just catching Largies? or Smallies?

If you were just catching Large Mouth Nannygai you could keep 9. If just Small Mouth Nannygai you could keep 9 of those.

If you caught a mixture of both species then you can only have a total of 9 all together. eg. 4 Largies and 5 smallies.

Also, they count toward your maximum limit of 20 coral reef fin fish per person. And you must cut off a pectoral fin before putting them in the esky. It's complicated and getting more so. Nugget's Species Summary table is probably the easiest to understand list. Note: that list has one minor out-of-date item in that Spanish Mackeral now also have to have a pectoral fin removed.

Interesting how the DPI don't bother putting the scientific names against the fish in their size and bag limit tables. Use of common names only for fish is not very precise especially for inter-state anglers.

With fuel prices the way they are 20 fish per person sounds fine. As for the nannys small mouth taste like mother in laws so you might as well only take the big mnouths

AND IF you are a Torres Strait Islander or an Aboriginal these bag / size limits DO NOT APPLY!

Shane not sure, but what I normally do if Im not sure on something is ring the DPI of Fisheries & Boating patrol, speak to an officer. Regarding the 30 bag limit being to much and one person suggested keep 5 and throw back 25, thats may work if you have 5 big fish but you aint gonna do that for whiting. I normally only come home with about 4 or 5 fish, but if I get more i'll normally bring them home because I am not able to go out every w/e and those fish are a supplement for meals during the week, I can see where you are comming from though, I would be happy if they reduced the bag limits. Today we went out fishing and between two of us we would of thrown at least 50 back, we came home with 4 parrot. We through back quite a few that were legal though just to small for us. Neways thats just my point of view on the issue. Goodluck on finding out shane & let us know please.

    Cheers Mick
