    Re: Salmon

As far as I know there is only one type caught - the Australian salmon - unless you get right up into tropical waters where you will find the blue salmon.

The aussie salmon extends from Tasmania into S/E Qld. They are a great fighting fish. Eating quality is similar to tailor ie if bled immediately and eaten fresh they are just ok, but they don't freeze and thaw well at all. Quite good either smoked or in fish cakes. This is the sucker here

    Re: Salmon

    hey squidgie
There are large schools of these brutes out the front of my place today.
I heard that the schools travelled past Evans Heads this year, they are returning back down south now. Wish they would keep them.
Good for a fight on light gear, they look like tailor feeding on the surface and they will take most tailor gear and baits sometimes, other times they are a pain and wont feed.
I always bury a couple under my tomato seedlings each year as fertilizer, works well.

    Re: Salmon

    Squidgie,

The Australian Salmon is also known in Victoria, S A and Tassie as salmon trout or bay trout, apparently.

Feeding habits similar to tailor. Apparently a good sporting fish to catch, but not much chop to eat.

    Re: Salmon

we call the small ones "cocky salmon" and the larger of the same species "blackback". There are 2 variences of the fish, one is found predomondly up the western australian coast line (up to 20lb) and the smaller one predomently the east coast. They come together and intermingle on the nw coast of Tasssie. The only way to tell them apart is to count the gill rakers of the fish. Needs to be dead to do this.
They are fine to eat, pan size is better. Bleed, fillet and cut out blood line.
    cheers

    Re: Salmon

I caught some Australian Salmon this year on The Gold Coast Spit )opposite Sea World) and yep, they are good sportfish, leaping out of the water. Caught them on small gang hooks (size 2) with frogmouth pillies. They seem to have come further north this year, and there were reports on this site of catches inside the Pin bar. I made them into fishcakes, althogh I did pan fry a small fillet and it was......lets say OK. I disagree with the same as tailor theory, because I believe fresh tailor to be in the "good" eating class, the Aussie Salmon has much more blood in it.

Now, Blue Salmon (or Threadfin) are quite different, can be caught from Noosa north , but usually Hervey Bay + north.....they are good eating.

Having said all that, neither of these species are really "salmon" and were incorrectly named by our forefathers.
