Does anyone know the best method of using mountain trout as live bait when fishing for large sea-running trout. Where is the best place to hook the bait and what sort of hook to use? Is it best to use a float and what sort of float and rig? How would I go slowly retrieving the bait hooked in the upper lip. Is it best to let the fish run with the bait or when is it best to attempt a hook set?
when i used to fish for sea runners in Tassie we used to hook the fish through the top of the head with the barb just protruding out the centre of the gill plate.
it was simply a matter of casting the bait(without sinkers) and slowly retrieving the bait till a bite was felt.
as soon as you feel the fish take...you let the fish run with it....a common way to know if it has taken properly is that the trout will run...stop...swallow...and then take off again....this is when you flip the bail arm over and strike at the trout
i only used the tecnique at night...but have had fantastic success
i have seen others use a float and put the hook just below the dorsal fin of the LIVE bait so that it remains alive.
also i am told..(.but have not used.)... small freshwater flathed are a top bait..also known as sandies
