Hi there fellow fisher folk, my name is Peter Thomson and I am the Owner of Odyssey Charters on the Gold Coast.
It saddened me to read that my crew and business was given a serve by an anonymous customer last weekend. As the owner I would like to respond to the writers concerns.
I have contacted the 3 different parties aboard the boat and was volunteered the following information:
One of the groups was suitably impressed with the effort in difficult conditions and has booked the boat for an exclusive charter in mid December.
The second party was impressed with our service and efforts to please and has rebooked with his father in the New Year.
The third party thought we were 10 minutes short on time and made no reference to either the crew’s ability or application to the task at hand.
Accordingly I have spoken to the crew and they tell me some of the group brought their own gear along and did not catch to many fish. In fact they inherited some of the catch from other passengers who intended to release their fish. It was also noted some of the party spent most of the trip resting in the forward cabin. In the matter of payment fares were collected on the dock at the completion of the charter. Normally fares are collected prior to departure. The skipper advised me the boat did leave the dock 10 minutes late as he was waiting for a late arrival and the vessel returned to dock shortly after the normal return time. I apologise for this inconvenience as we gave the late arrival a short extension of time and thought this would be understood by the other guests aboard.
At no time was any dissatisfaction of the service mentioned and none of the passengers made any attempt to contact me to register their complaint.
My business; Odyssey Charters has received good reviews from contributors to this site in the past and I invite any former or intending customers to contact me directly if they have any concerns or wish to discuss any aspects of how we run the business. We always do the best we can for our partons and constantly strive to improve how we do business.
In this respect customer feedback is essential and again I urge anyone to who feels they have an issue to contact me in the first instance, as petty swipes by anonymous contributors have no benefit to any parties.
My contact details are: www.odysseycharters.com.au ; info@odysseycharters.com.au our phone number and postal address are on the home page of the web site.
Cheers

Always good to hear both sides of the story!
Well done Odyssey Charters for responding.
A well written response Peter. Sounds like you care about your business, good on you for standing up and giving us the 'other' side.
Cheers,

all about perspective and precieved outcomes.
IMO in a situation like this there may be no wrong and right, I wasnt there so I dont Know. I also read it that the owner wasnt the skipper on the day. When I go on charters/guided trips I expect the skipper/deckie/guide to work for me, I am paying them and not to fish, but in saying that I have never payed a skipper/guide where I have not asked them to have a bit of a fish with me and when others are also paying it needs to be a general concenus.
We can all go on a charter/guided trip and not catch fish (thats fishing & the weather gods) but we should feel that its been an experience.
Hope it all comes together in the end for all parties involved
cheers

Dear Slyham 775;
Regarding a top charter out of the Gold Coast.... I have used Seaprobe out of Southport twice so far for work related team building / bonding days and I have to say the entire fishing crew from the MCH intensive care unit who went out are still raving about it!
Sea Probe is a 10.5m NorCat - twin hull so very stable compared to a mono. The boat moves along nicely too so less time wasted in travel. The crew are tops - its a family affair. Very professional and experienced and patient with those who are not so adapt at fishing.
Each time we have been out - we have been rewarded with a great feed of fish and on the last trip we caught some of the biggest (yummiest) cobia I have ever seen. Of course all the catch was cleaned and filleted and divided up at the end to take home.
As for the crew fishing - I have used Seaprobe from the Goldie, Wahoo from Sunny Coast and WOFTAM in Vanuatu, and all crews have a fish in my experience. It doesnt worry me provided they look after the paying customer first...
Seaprobe crew were fishing for US (catching livies - the best bait for cobia to make OUR day more exciting) and the deckie would always be ready to help us first with gaffing, rebaiting, line rigging etc.
I have paid more to see whales on a charter before - and with Sea Probe on our first trip we seen whales, dolphins and caught some amazing fish!

I would have thought that after writting something like that bundopeace should at least reply to the post from the owner of the business. If for no other reason than to highlight his concerns, seems to me that he wasn't serious about the matter in the first place.
Hmmm, maybe he hasnt been back online since he made the post.Originally Posted by jibby

Hey all,
Interesting to read I personally have been on Odysee charters and have been impressed with their service they are deffinatly one of the better ones on the coast. And as for bundopeace i would like to hear your response for what peter has to say, for the owner of a charter boat to jump online and make a statement must mean that he does give a s__t and not just a money chasser. Some people don't realise how a petty comment can make an impact on a buisness there are so many people that read these forums and straight away think " Odasyee charters are s__t when in fact there not" if you do have a problem try and resolve it with the owner first before you jump on the net and write something only my opinion.

OdysseyOwner, did someone tell you this post was here or are you are regulare guest reading this forum.?Originally Posted by OdysseyOwner
The 3rd party seems to have concerns, and maybe that is the person who posted here.
The skipper told you he was late leaving as a person was late, was this the morning charter or the afternoon charter.? If the morning charter maybe the skipper was in a hurry to meet the afternoon booking.
More needs to be told here,I do not think we are getting the full story from both sides.
Thanks for the replies to my position. I appreciate the support and your comments. In any situation there will always be conjecture and differing opinions as to what either happened or did not happen. As I was not on the boat I accept that there will always be the customers view, the crews view, my view of what I have been told and what actually took place on the charter.
For your general interest I have been operating fishing tours and charters for almost 14 years from ports in NSW and have been here on the Gold Coast for the last 12 months. We have previously won awards for excellence in tourism and business operations and in this time have only had to deal with 3 issues regarding our service.
In this instance we gave a late arrival for the morning charter some aditional time to arrive and I am satisfied that the crew did their best in difficult conditions. Additionally I am aware of which party the writer belonged to and suffice to say I am sorry he was dissappointed with our service. My crew have my full confidence and if the writer wants to contact me directly I will be pleased to discuss his issues and offer a complimentary trip if I think his position has merit.
Once again thanks for all replies and we look forward to having some of you as our guests on future charters.

OdysseyOwner,
I think you have been a little hard done by here as i dont think Bundopeace has any idea what he said can effect your buisness is such a negative way. When i was in the Whitsundays i went on the rapture charter twice with my brother. My bro didnt catch anything on the first day and then constantly complained about them that night the next day he caught some nice Lippers and Coral Trout and then he could never stop praising them! It is very easy to blame people because thats what us humans like to do when something goes wrong but maybe you should try and see the situation in someone elses shoes.
Cheers Joel
