Mahi Mahi

As a sport fisherwoman, I like to target fish that I’ve never caught before; next on my list of 'fish to catch' is a Mahi Mahi.....in the Mackay/Whitsunday area. All information on this fish and catching it would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Juicyfruit!

I also love catching new species. Have caught a couple of mahi mahi, and top of my most wanted list atm are wahoo, sailfish, tarpon and giant harring.

You will probably get the best responses from the game fishers here, but mahi mahi are usually caught as a bycatch when fishing for billies. They will often come up a good burley trail though.

They fall for the standard skipping gar or skirted lure on the troll, any of the marlin fishing methods, the shelf is a fair way off that area i think so you might have to put some big miles into get at them, the next few wks is a great time for them.

heres my first and only one so far.

caught it on a live whiptail floating under a ballon.
about 20km off noosa in 54m of water.

hope this helps. the fish of a life time as far as i'm concerned, was by myself and took over a hour to get it in the boat.
