    Fishing with skirts

I'm new to the sport of deep sea fishing. Been out only afew times but normally with people who know what they're doing. But now I have bought a boat and need to skill up quickly.

When do you use a skirt ? Live Bait / Pilchards / Lures and typically what fish would you be targeting ?

    Re: Fishing with skirts

the skirt is best worn on the hips...i gives freedom of movement and the ability for quick access when leaning over the side for relief purposes

as for all the rest...it depends on where you are...what you think is available...and what kind of fishing you want to do.

lives for pelagics and larger bottom feeders

pillies for general bottom bouncing...or floating a bait in a trail...or macks

lures for casting to seen fish...and trolling..or blind casting

    Thanks
I'm always amazed when I get an answer from Cyberspace - new to forums. I really do appreciate the responses.

V Funny about the skirts....Maybe I asked poorly...but will look up the Cd in any event - sounds like a good idea.

What i meant was - when trolling, and fishing a live bait would you use a skirt, and if so under what circumstances as opposed to not using a skirt.

When trolling and fishing a bait (pilchard, etc) when would you use a skirt and why ?

Would you ever use a skirt with a lure ?

i ahve seen a "skirt" which seems to use a sinker for weight - looks like a squid is usually rubber / plastic and comes in varying colours ? - Any info on that, and how to fish it ?

The standard rubber skirts can be used for various methods .

i use them when trolling dead baits like gar .( swim baits and skip baits )
You can slide them down over the head of the bait ...alternatively you can put a nose cone on , but i still slide a skirt over that for the added colour .
It helps keep the water pressure direct over the head , to stop the head of the bait from tilting away from the line and causing it too spin .
I also use them sometimes when drifting or slow trolling pilchards as again , it helps stop the spin .
it can also give a bit of colour, and hide / hold a small sinker on the bait .

They are not for targetting any fish in particular , more a method of fishing .
Generally the methods they are used in are for pelagics though

No you don't use a plastic skirt with another lure ...no need
They can be used as a lure them selves though, there are better options , but the tuna chew them up
Just so we are on the same page ,.....this is what you are talking about ????
These are rigged with a hook , but you get the drift ...
