Hi lads,
Im a keen fisho and have caught many things over the years but never had any luck with sharks. I live about 15min boat drive from the seaway. Does anyone know any good spots around the broady which are likely spots to hook up. Also any help with baits and rigs would be awesome.

There are plenty of guys on this forum that should be able to help you (and I'm not one of them). For sharks you may need to find some live bait and hook them through their back or their front lip. The key is probably big baits and to give it a go at night. There is also a few threads on the forum that should give you a idea on catching them.

Just thought i would tell everyone how i went tonight.
We started off in the coomera rive near paradise point end but the only bites we were getting were big mosquito bites. We moved out of the river towards the northern end of browns inlet (opposite Soverign Is) right next to a starboard marker there is about 6 metres of water.
After about half an hour my rachet went on my over head reel; spooled with 13kg braid and baited with a 20cm bream, 10o Hook and 2 metres of wire. I picked up the rod and felt some movement and striked......i was on.
My line was going out so fast we had to pull the anchor and reverse after it to avoid being spooled. So many times it did big runs like a freight train and then it would stop and only move slowly- especially when it was under neath the boat.
This went on for about 40 minutes of hard winding and the fish and i were both getting tired. Another huge run and the line went TWANG.........F%^%#$@!
I hadnt even tightened up the drag in the last 15 mins, i was not happy. Ah well.
My guess it would have been a around the 4 or 5 feet mark. Any one else know how big a fish like this could be?

geez mate did you just commit to writing that you were using undersized bream as bait?
nd it was probably a stingray or or a passing log
I think Matt 20 ment the bream was 20cmish probably closer to 24cm's

Sorry it was a typo- 30 cm
As for the passing log (yeah okay......) and stingrays, sounds likely for someone who wasnt there but i have fished the broadwater for many years and caught dozens of monster rays on bream gear and none of them have ever pulled like this thing.
The bream was alive and kicking when it was out there as well, unlikly a ray would take a bream in good health- from my experience they are scavengers.
A couple of weeks ago the wife and I were floating some pillies over a shallow rocky reef in about 1.5m of clear water. This 2m shark comes up and starts sniffing the wifes pillie. So whats she do? She starts winding in to get her bait away from the shark, and Mr shark gets excited and nails it. The spinning reel is screaming and line is going out pretty fast even though mr shark is only cruising away. Must have only been lip hooked as no bite off. Finally convinced her to keep screwing up the drag to avoid getting spooled. LOL.
Another time I was playing a nice barra when the line goes slack and the barra appears almost at my feet trying to get under the rock ledge I was standing on.
Literally right on his tail is a little river shark smaller than the barra. I am winding as fast as I can to get the slack line in and try to lift the barra out. The barra is doing frantic figure 8s at my feet trying to escape the shark. Next thing the shark snags me line with his mouth and ping goes my line. And off goes the barra!
I suppose if there is a moral in there somewhere its that sharks prefer live bait.
Never hooked one on a lure though.
We hooked a BIGTiger shark last week slow trolling dead baits at 1770. So I think you're right, they like live or moving baits.

you did OK for a first trip. I have caught a few sharks, and a shark that did that to you for 30 mins or so would have been around 2 m or bigger. It probably rolled in your trace and rubbed you off won its body. They do love live baits - catfish and mullet are both very good. You might consider using a few metres of heavy mono leader as well as your wire trace next time. Also think about what you will do if you do get a big one close to your boat - ie how will you cut it off quickly and close to the hook?
Don't be put off, not all sharks will be that big. They are most common around 1 m or so. At this time of year, they move inshore and up the creeks to breed.

yes it was illegal, but its a pretty small crime in the scheme of things.
