    Jigging on GBR

I have heard a lot about this 'Jigging' thing. On a recent trip to WA, it seemed to be popular over there and I actually bought a couple of jigs. Used them out deep and had no luck.

Has anybody out there had any luck jigging on the Great Barrier Reef?

I thought I would give it a try over here

What species of fish have people been catching? I will be fishing off Cairns

    Cheers,

    Geoff

Geoff I've been on a few charters out of cairns with japanese anglers on combined GT popper fishing and jigging trips and yes there is huge potential in jigging it's something that hasn't really taken off here as it has down south the near inshore areas such as the local wrecks get jigged on a consistant basis but outside is a different story. Anywhere around the outer reefs and out around the 100mtr. line has great potential I've seen yellowfin tua rosey jobfish red emperor and mackerel jigged off the one mark using knife type jigs, and I know of good dogtooth tuna caught a little furter north. It's a style of fishing I'm pretty keen to explore more so If your keen for a trip let me know.

count me in on those trips cyclone. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

as cyclone said - lots of jigging is done successfully on a number of wrecks close to cairns.

i can't see why you wouldn't brain some good reds drifting the rubble grounds or get nailed by big dogtooth jigging the outer reef deep ledges.

we don't have the amberjack/samsonfish of down south - but there's still plenty of biguns out there willing to play if you put in the effort. am keen to have a crack at this sort of fishing locally myself.

In my opinion, I think jigging is a huge discovery in the world of fishing . In very hot days, when fish go deep in fresh water, this is the only way to catch a fish when popper fishing is resultless.
The first time I tried it after 3 hours of popper fishing with absolutely no result, I was swallowed my 10 jigs and taken 300 m of 80lbs braid in 20 minutes !!! Unbelievable...
Hard to understand why this bloody thing has so much effect down there ...but it works !!!!!
