    Am I to soft?

G'day, the area I fish has a lot of small to medium size fish (1-2kg) so I fish lite for best results, atleast once a trip though we manage to hook up on that one that is a bit bigger, as a result of the lite gear I always try and nerse the fish in. we managed to land one last trip and turned out to be a 75cm estury cod but the was still no set in well, should i go harder or do you just have to take your chances when fishing lite and hook up big?

I've lost a few decent fish due to light tackle fishing. But I continue struggling. When you do land the fish the rewards are brilliant, and you have a chance at serious records if you play in that space.

Just a question - are you concerned about hook or line strength when you say go harder ?

I assume you have some strong leader/ tippet that you could use, and stay with lighter line strengths

Stick with light. You may get bricked a lot more, but you also hook up to a lot more.

I agree with Cheech, I fish fairly light but not as light as my 4 year old (bloody barbie rod) and it always catches the first fish without fail!!

I have always fished light and found that perserverence pays off. Setting the hooks is not a problem as the fish does all the work by just leaning back slightly on the rod as the fish trys to take that first run. As for being bricked I admit that it does happen but it happens on heavier gear as well. I have found that I can land more fish by playing them out than going heavier and trying to skull drag them in.

Thank you all for your feed back, I will stick with fishing light, I sure do agree with the more hook ups point, just gets frustraiting getting smashed so often, but I spose you have to hook them to land them.

    Ultra sharp hooks.

You can also toss small lures with the light line.

I still have a couple of light rigs for floatlining but recently picked up 2 15-24kg livefibres and tld 25s loaded with 50lb braid...catch rate has improved markedly...not dropping anywhere as many fish...getting to see some of the things that had previously monstered and smashed me up...when I've got a feed I like to go back to the lighter gear...but these days for me its feed first...apologies to the purists out there

Fresh chemical sharpened hooks every time means if this fish gets it in his mouth you have a better chance of it sticking in
