Wathumba Ck - Info required
Hi
We were thinking that a trip to Wathumba Ck would be good, but we haven't been there for many years. And info / advice would be good -
How much tide do you need to get in (I need about 450mm water depth)
If you're staying on the boat, is it best to anchor in the creek on the north side
Does UHF coverage extend that far north
How far is the round trip from Urangan
How bad are the sandflies at this time of year
Any other info would be good
Thanks Whichway

Tide needs to be about 1/3 in to give you enough water to be comfortable. Staying on the boat you will need to be close to the north shore of the creek to be in the channel. This time of year can be harsh with sandflies but being out on the water will help a little but I would still be taking something to spray on to keep them at bay UHF coverage can be a little broken depending on how good your arial is. I have never heard any problems with sail boats but some smaller fishing boats with short arials do have problems until they leave the creek and get into open water. There is now a lock box on the north shore for food items if you decide to camp there but toilet facilities are restricted to the south shore. There are no bins on either side of the creek so what you take you take home.
Hope this has helped.

Dont bother with any sort of mossie repellent unless its 'bushman' and it has to be the gel stuff that you rub on. It is bloody unreal. It outdid all other brands ive ever tried easily

Wathumba is a great spot. Great hopping off base to Rooney's. Just GPS the entrance to the creek so you can find it in low light. Great camp spot with deep water anchorage at front (Well 1.5m at low tide). Haven't been there this time of year, normally go October. From memory last time it was about an hour and half trip from Urangan, but we were thumping over 1.5 metre swell from the Northerlies. Try and avoid the trip if there is projected North, North Westerlies as it can get a bit untidy running up the inide of the island. MyVHF got good reception with VMR Hervey Bay who run seven days a week. I normally jumped on in the mornings to let them know the Dingos hadn't got us yet .
Hope some of this helps.

Hi
Thanks for all the help
The (female) crew is a bit worried about the sandfly situation. We are really keen, but are wavering a bit due to this.
Have to see - maybe with mosquito coils etc we might be OK
