If you're landbased I assume you're fishing near shallow bommies? If so get some 3 and 4 inch deep diving minows and cast around the bommies with 30 pound braid. Trout love lures and you'll cover more area that way

Also, unweighted pilchard on ganged hooks. Depending on the location you will also tangle with plenty of other beasties - just hold on tight!

dont forget a heavy leader also, otherwise braid will simply be the end of ya on the reef

or you could go with a north queensland charter special,, a handline, some ball sinkers and a hook, oh and for the ultimate setup just get one of those old glass bottom boats and your away

    Cheers

P.S: don't forget the bicycle inner tube.

THANKS GUYS for your response. Some Duh!!! questions. What is bommies scuttlebut or anybody? Why a bicycle inner tube Matty?

Taking the family up to Daydream Island for a few days. Hope I can get away on a charter. Any more thoughts or advice is very much welcomed.

Will now have to try and learn how to use my calcutta 200. Was thinking of loading up with either Daiwa TD sensor or Yamamtoy saltwater PE if it is available from Fishhead. Any thoughts on those braid.

    Angha,

A bommie is the lump of rock or coral, or combination of both the trout hang around. Will usually be rocks if nearer to shore. In areas like Daydream where there is heaps of reef - it is the isolated bommie just away from the main structure which will hold greater concentrations of trout. The bicycle tube is cut into 3-5cm sections and placed over the index fingers when handlining to reduce line cuts.

As mentioned use at least 50lb mono leader and AT LEAST 30lb braid. I use 50 and get smoked at least once a session.

Piccie of a trout from a bommie in 4 metres of water - go light!
