    Fishing Hamilton Island and surrounds

    Hi All,
I'm thinking about moving up to Hamilton Island to work. Anyone know if it is good fishing from the island, or do you need to go out to the reef? ( I won't have a boat )
    Any Ausfishers based on Hamilton?

    Cheers,
    Steven

Hamilton Island its self has boat hire, 12ft tinnies 5hp motor. However in hiring their tinnies you are only allowed to fish in certain areas (that they have put in place). It’s a shame that the charter boat Renegade doesn’t operate from there anymore, it wasn’t a bad charter. The entire waters on and around Hamilton Island is zoned yellow. In my experience, the reef is a much better and fruitful option. As for fishing from the island shores, I don’t know if the Island allows it, best you contact the Island for their policy, but I did see a fisherman fish all day (allowed or not) and not catch a thing *shrug*.

    Juicy

P.S. Hope your accommodation isn't in "Donga City".

The whitsundays island area is pretty dead and the main reaon for this is the huge numbers of people who visit and the huge amount of boat traffic the goes through. A lot of run around those islands to which is quite good for pelagics.

The outer reefs like line reef are awesome and are quite accessible by a 5m plus boat. You drive the boat to Haymen Island and stay the night in the anchorage then up early and off to the reef about a 40 minute trip

did the Renegade Charter out of Hamilton...two years ago...caught 7 Nannies up to about 9kilos..out of a total of 20 for 9 anglers....run to the reef was about 45mins.....not sure of which bommie we fished.

the previous day they filled all the fish boxes on large mouths....did see an ole guy in a 4m tinnie and his wife get totally smoked by a spaniard

was funny as she yelled at him the whole time

Have a mate moving to Airlie Beach and we've made the decision to start heading south for trips more often. VERY keen on the Whitsundays for boating, camping, fishing trips. Woudl like to know more about anchorage at Hayman - is it in a marina or a national park?
