fishing in moreten bay

hey all

this is my first post on this forum so go easy. Anyway my mate has has got a 17ft
center console boat if the weather is good we are going to go out in the bay the
only problem is that we have no idea on were any off the hot spots are for trolling
or droping a line for some snapper. So if anyone wouldn't mind letting so know
some good spots it would be very much appreciated.

There are a few GPS marks about 'hotspots' in this forum. Check them out, start from those and then you will find your own secret ones, just like everyone else.

That's not a big boat your Mate has there and I can guarantee you that in any wind over 15 knots you will get a bit of a belting in the open parts of the Bay. Moreton Bay is a VERY dangerous patch of water when the winds get up and you don't want to be caught out there when they get nasty. First and most importantly, find the nearest VMR or COASTGUARD unit near where you launch, have your Mate sign up as an ASSOCIATE Member and listen to their advice.

Don't even consider crossing the Bar in that boat and be really wary of the waters north and east of Peel Island in SE & NE winds. The Bay is generally very shallow and can turn mean in a matter of five (5) minutes with the right conditions.

Suggest you mess about Peel Island and further south but decent snapper are very scarce in the Bay or way up north near Mud Is and on the inside of Moreton Is. Not good places in a small boat and ratty weather.

A 17' boat is fine for crossing the bar, plenty have done it for years in boats that size and smaller. All comes down to the capabilities of that particular boat and the ability and experience of the skipper. Mr PinkPanther is just being conservative as he used to be in VMR.

There are lots of spots for snapper throughout the bay, but they are not easy to catch in the bay. Get out there early, be quiet, use burley, fish light tackle and the freshest baits you can get.

Maybe nispro4X4 is experienced, maybe he is not.

IMHO, I reckon it's a dead cert though that there will be a lot of inexperienced boaties that read what PP has had to say and will benefit from his knowledge. After reading Scott's tale just outside the South Passage on the weekend, I would say we all should take heed. Afterall, they were experienced too.

A great place to start is around the islands out from manly, heading out from manly the eastern side of green island is whether a try you mainly get nice size squire and sweeties on the reef. Fresh bait and burley is a must.
