Hi all. Have any of you fished Stanage Bay at all? I am thinking about going there next year for a holiday. I would love to hear some feedback about the area particulary best time of year (weather wise), accomodation and OF COURSE the fishing, both estuary and reefs. Cheers!
mate where do i start. i was up there for two weeks over the christmas period, i gotta say it was fantastic!!!!!!!!!!! fished both the reefs and estuary's with great sucsess. crabs, ya never seen so many big quality crabs. stanage is great but it is so remote and rugged, the women, unless avid fisherfolk have got not much to do.my best advice to you is to give von and tony a call at stange bay marine and accomodation centre a call (07 49373145) or stanage bay.com.au. the tides are massive up there (some up to 7 meters) so ya really gotta work with them, the current is wicked. we fished the mumford group of islands(in a 17footer, about 22 miles out) with no worries at all and cleaned up on grassy's, parrot and the odd trout. if knew how to post pics i would. best thing about being so remote is that they have everything there. bait, tackle all at brisbane prices! pm me for anymore ya wanna know.

I was up there (along with a group of friends) in July last year. The weather wasn't great unfornately (nice the day we arrived, nice the day we left, shit the days we were there!), but we still had a ball.
We were restricted to the estuary. Caught a few fish just around the boat ramp (watch the tides) including parrot, bream, estuary cod and a nice jew, and some HUGE muddies. I have some pics, but can't seem to work out how to post them up
I am planning a trip up there again late this year just before summer...watch out for the sandflies in summer!
Reel Obsession - the road condition varies all year depending on the rain/traffic.
The road is maintained by the army and from the highway turnoff to the last army gate is normally pretty good. We averaged about 60kms. However, the last quarter of road (about 20ks) gets pretty rough and corrugated - we averaged about 25kms. I took my offroad caravan in there without too many drama's, but would definately recommed you take it easy and let your trailer tyres down a little to assist in softening the ride...interestingly, all the locals have tinnies!

you can tow a glass boat of that size in no worries(i seen cats up there on tri-axles), make sure your trailer is in tip top condition, and take spares, i even took a spare axle. just cover the front of your boat up with a tarp on concretors plastics, to avoid the gel coat getting chipped
Thanks for the feedback on the Stanage Bay road. I still have 12 months before the trip, but I want to be as prepared as I possible can, dont want to wreck a new boat.
Yep, camp ground is free - one of the few great free places left!
