Ive never really had many troubles with hooking my live mullet but when i really started thinking about it, ive been only getting about a 40-50% hookup rate on hits from jew/sharks. How do you set your hooks on a jew sized mullet to achieve maximum hookup rate?
I have mainly been hooking them just in front of the tail. Thanks
Matt
Same here mate, would like to here fellow fishos ideas, would you hook a live herring in the same spot as the mullett. Also, when using beach worms, what hook is the best for jewie fishin taking into account that i use the whole worm and need to slide it over the eye of the hook and up the line.

herring get hooked just in front of the top dorsal fin, only problem there are choppers and trevs taking the tail... but that method will hook most fish.
mullet are usually hooked through the mouth but ive noticed jew that ive hooked dont stay on... so next time i go jew fishin i will be using a two hook rig, one on the upper lip and one on the tail... i dont think you can do to much more than that.
Wth worms, get a 4/0 or 3/0 hook that isnt an octopus style, and thread about 3cm of worm on the hook and over the eye so it is up the line, now just weave the hook into the worm leaving generous amounts of worm hanging off, use anything up to 3 or 4 worms on a hook if they are small of 1 big worm. This gets expensive if you are buying the worms but if you're catching them you shouldnt have a problem. Herring i usually hook just in the dorsal region but they have a smaller body and are less hardy than a mullet
A bloke down "Evans" way showed me a good trick when using worms for jew.
Tie a long double then thread the hook on and pass the hook thru the loop this leaves you with no knot to thread the worm over. Works great.
Try playing around with a 2 hook snelled rig. The question here is a sliding snell or a fiix snelled rig? The advantages of a sliding snell is you can adjust the rig to suit the bait. I prefer a fixed snell because on hook up, the fixed snells wont move, as with the sliding snell if hooked up. The hook will move down the line and bang with the bottom snelled hook.
Which in this case I believe has caused loss of fish for myself.
Regards with hooking live baits with my snelled rigs, I tend to put the upper snell through the nose or mouth, and the bottom snell under behind anal, or you could put the bottom snell on the back down near the tail.
Fishing the river with livies i hook them threw the back under dorsal fin, but when there is current i put the hook through the nostrils. makes them look natural.
Dont ever hook them from the bottom jaw upwards both threw lips otherwise they die. Just sideways threw the nostrils works best

Ok, well went out in the last few hours since i started this thread and had a go with dad. Dad got 1 school jew about 4kg and i hooked, and landed an estimated 7/8foot tiger shark. The mullet managed to stay on for these as they were the only 2 hits we got all night.
