    Channels for marine radios

    Hi all,
What is commonly used in the townsville area UHF or 27MHZ. Only have 4.2m boat so wont be going miles offshore.
Am looking to buy a marine radio GME GX294 or the GME 300SX 27 MHz. Any Ideas???????
And finally what are the common frequencies used by fishos in this area, and what channel is the coast gaurd on?

    Thanks for your help

    Nick

P.S should i have posted this in the general chat area.

    Hi Nick,

I can't comment on the Townsville area specifically but...

I think you mean VHF rather than UHF. That's not to say you can't have UHF CB in your boat but you'd be better off with 27MHz or VHF marine radios.

For VHF you really need to get a licence (Operators Certificate of Proficiency). That way you'll know what channels are used for what purpose.

For distress calls you contact Coastguard or VMR on VHF channel 16 or 27MHz channel 88 (27.880).

    Chris.
