i'm scared,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,like daveo's response i to hooked a flattie with a tag out of the passage about 2 yrs ago,,, the only thing was, the tag was only half there,,, the remainder was illegible to do anything about,,,interesting though cause the size of the lizard was about the width of a piece of a4 paper,,, makes ya wonder how big it was when it was first marked,,,,,,,,,
    can it get any better??????????????,,,,,,,,,,,,,,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgG_TxEPaQE

Here's the evidence for my barra recapture. Recaught the same fish myself after 630 days in the same creek. Had only grow 40mm , way less than I thought.

Apparently the recapture rate for reds is higher than any other fish.

Am I reading this right? What does 'secondary' mean, is that by catch?

I see jacks are on the list of tagged species. Maybe those who fish for jacks should consider getting a tagging kit? considering that suntag will give you a certificate and tell you the growth rate and movement from last capture site, its worthwhile info.

Ive sent suntag an email asking for more info about joining the taggers list.

I caught a tagged mangrove jack in the Pumistone Passage a few months back - it was undersize so it went back in the water and I must have written the tag number down incorrectly because suntag couldn't find it.

Re: I caught a tagged fish

    G'day Mike,

Sometimes there is a bit of a delay in getting tag locations and details through to Suntag 'cause sometimes we're to busy fishing

I usually only put mine through once a month to our tagging officer and then he has to compilate all members tags into one report to send off to Suntag. Can take some work when you consider 100+ tags a month with descriptions, condition, angler, time, date, location, map reference, etc. all have to be entered to make for an effective database .

But at least you reported!! It is really great when the tag number comes back in, whether they've graced the dinner plate or been returned to fight another day, Suntag can at least add to their growing database, and a lot of information can be gleaned from the results.

The more people who ring the 1800 number the better

    Regards
    Geoff

Re: I caught a tagged fish

I must have tagged around 500 gamefish through the NSW fisheries tagging program.
These have included Albacore, Stripies and Black Marlin.

I have always had the yearning desire to catch a tagged fish, or even better, to have a fish that I have tagged be recaptured.

As of yet... neither has happened.

Some of these have been at large since 1993.

So ... given current growth rates of tuna, and 13 years at large ... if anyone happens to catch an Albacore that weighs around a tonne .... it could be my fish

    Cheers

    Pete

    White,

check Geoff's post above. Taggers have to get their info into the database before the fish can be identified.

    Pete,

you must be unlucky. Out of 80 odd that I have been on boats for we have recaptured or had recaptured 5. One was a sick Sail on the day it was tagged by someone else, we swam it and swam it and let it go but didn't like its chances, one we recaptured of Evan Jones' which was out for 24 days, one of ours was recaptured after 31 days by PASU, we recaptured one of Steve Jensen's fish when he still had Battledeck before Animal and recaptured a Black that had swum from Townsville to Caloundra in 175 days. Gamefish are another story but. Mackmauler had a pic up here of Mahi Mahi he recaptured off Pt Lookout that was also tagged on Battledeck but we have had none of ours turn up or haven't recaptured anything with a tag in it.

Re: I caught a tagged fish

I have long been an admirer of the work of the local branch of Suntag at Gladstone and have phoned in details of a number of recaptures....Mangrove Jack; Barramundi and the odd Bream. The latest recapture thrilled me as the certificate showed that I had recaptured this fish before. All the info is greatfully received by Suntag as it builds the big picture and it is really exciting to be a part (even if only a very small part) of this research.
Details of my latest recapture as follows:-
Barramundi first caught and tagged 11/11/2005 at 350mm.
Recaptured by myself July 2006 at 500mm and released.
Recaptured by myself 30/01/2007 at 580mm and released (still closed season.)
All captures in same area...very good growth rate...one of the last wild rivers....no dams on the Calliope.

Yes I do eat the odd Barra, but if I recapture this fish it will be going back.... something special about this one.... I'll remember the tag number....we have a mutual understanding??.

    Cheers,
    Steve.
