I caught a tagged fish

Fishing my usual part of the broadwater this morning, and the water is black as an abos armpit (can I say that here?). No action all morning, until I get this estuary cod with a yellow tag in him. Its the first time Ive heard about it, I didnt know they did that with anything but game fish.

Has anybody else caught tagged fish? I suppose you all have, but it was a novelty for me. I rang the number, and quoted the tag, and they were very happy to know about it. They wanted his length (35cm) but didnt want his weight. Said theyd send me a certificate with my name on it, with all the info on where and when he was tagged.

Not much else to report, except I wont bother fishing again for a couple of days when the water cleans up. I thought there might be jew action, but I was wrong. Water temp has dropped, and no jacks about.

Cool, interestingly enough, the only tagged fish I have ever caught was also a cod, up in Toogoom, north of Hervey Bay. That's cool that they will send you out details of the fish, hope I get a tagged fish again one day.

Did they say why they were tagging Cod or what their research was???

My dad caught a tagged flathead up in Pummicestone passage a few years ago. They did similar with the certificate. He said they were surprised that it was in the same general area that it had been released when initially tagged some 18 months earlier and hadn't really moved that far. They were however surprised at the growth which they thought might have been greater. So they obviously keep reasonable data on the fish.

Cod are on the sunfish tag list, as are bream, snapper (squire), flathead to name a few. I've tagged dozens of cod in the few months that I've had tags - none down your way though. The person that tagged the fish will also get an update on that fish and it's a great research tool. It's interesting to see how far some fish have or haven't travelled from the tagging location.

I have been monitoring ausfish for a few months before becoming a member. And then have been waiting a few weeks to jump in on a discussion thread, well now is my time.

My father-in-law caught at tagged flathead last year up at YellowPatch (inside of Cape Capricorn) and was sent out the certifcate stating the previous details i.e weight, location of tag insert etc. He was quite chuffed as he is not much of a fisherman.

I have caught 2 squire on the Gold Coast with a tag and also a little Red Emperor off Double Island Point. The certificate's are a fantastic idea to get an idea on growth rates, travel and also gives people an incentive to join in tagging fish.

I have just received some interesting info on tagged fish which might interest some.

Barramundi- Tagged in 7 mile creek north of Turkey Beach at 55.5cm on 21/03/98 was recaptured in Fitzroy River near Rockhampton at 94.5cm on the 23/10/02. It had travelled more then 125km north and grown 390mm in 1677 days.





Red Emperor- Tagged out from the Wide Bay Bar area

This one is very interesing as it was caught 8 times in just over 1 year with it being caught 4 times in less then 1 month. As you can see there are slight differences with the measured length with it shrinking on the last capture.
This fish was caught in very much the same area everytime.

I tagged a barra here on the west coast and recaptured the same fish myself nearly 2yrs later. Same creek , it grew around 16cm. I also tagged a sailfish off Dampier and about 6mths later I was out with a mate and he recaught it. These are both spieces that don't migrate though.

Jeez and they reckon fish are getting smarter and hookshy. This bloke can't be the sharpest knife in the drawer. Makes you wonder how many fish are left in the ocean if the same fish is caught so many times in such a short period? Says a lot about reds' ability to deal with C&R though.

Interesting!. Never realised that the tagging programs extended to fish such as cod, tailor and whiting. Wonder why mangrove jacks aren't on the list of fish to be tagged though. Been trying for years to join the club of people who have caught a jack and would be interested to see just how many people have caught the same mangrove jack.

yes it was Tony Stewart. He tags stack loads of fish up there. Gotta get my butt into gear and join a club so i can start doing it myself. Apparently hardly any legal sized reds are re-captured they just seem to disapear. I would love to start tagging them out near the shelf and see if they move around unlike the close in reds.
