    FRASER - WHAT ABOUT PRAWNS

Taking my family to Fraser for a week in April. We will be fishing the surf. Any advise on Fishing in Fraser would be appreciated.

What do you do about Bait and which bait to use? What can we expect to catch.

    Thanks

Apart from Pillies and Pipies ........ WHAT ABOUT PRAWNS????

Where abouts are you staying m8? camping or cabin? the fish you would expect to catch would depend on the bait you used, plenty of options.

    Re: FRASER

I havn't been there for years but we always went with pillies and chook gut.

got pipies off the beach and that was all we ever needed.

After the last trip there I was shocked at how people drove down the beach.. all flat out and driving like F**kwits. >

Keep a good eye on the kids if they are young and not to road wise M8.

    Re: FRASER

April is not a bad time for the back beach, but if you do stike a bad south easterly it can ruin the fishing off the beach, If this happens head over to the west side and try kingfisher or get a map and find the road that gets you to Ungowa, also known as South White Cliffs the water there we be calm. Also at Ungowa below the rangers houses at low tide you can stand on the edge of the drop off and fish straight into 30 to40 ft of water and maybe catch the odd reefy on either squid yabbies fish fillets or live bait if you can get any , also there are a lot of mackerel trevely and tuna cruise up and down the ledge so take some lures. A mile south of the houses you can fish off another rock ledge at high tide , there is a road that links up. Just thought i would give you an alternative so that you dont have to sit around all day drinking beer if it blows on the east side. Bob.

    Angha,

Everyone has their own ideas of fishing fraser.
You have just recieved some good advise however take your own bait, pillies, squid. Plenty of pippies to get off the beach and worms from locals if you ask.
Dont buy pillies over there as i have never had any luck with it because its always been old.
Depends on where you stay look for good gutters and mark them with a land mark.
Indian head and waddy produce quality fishing over there. Depending on howmuch sand is around the mahino you can have goood fishing there.
Look up the reports on fraser and you will find a mountian of infor there.

    Re: FRASER

Have a look at www.fishingfraserisland.com. It has a monthly fishing report and also information on beach and track conditions etc.

I take my family to the island every year and except for a couple of packs of pillies I collect all the bait I need on the island. Pippies can be easily collected at low tide on the ocean beach, small soldier crabs and yabbies can be pumped from the flats around Kingfisher bay resort at low tide also. If you take a bait jig you can pick up plenty of herring from around the jetty at Kingfisher also but it is not the most castnet friendly place, so think twice before you toss it over that big school of hardyheads hanging round the jetty. If you have the skill and/or paitience then beachworms can be added to the bait bucket aswell. Whiting, bream, tarwhine, flathead and dart will take any of the baits that I have mentioned here, just keep trying the different gutters until you find the fish. Alot of people bag dart but if they are iced down, skinned and eaten fresh they are really very good on the barbie on the same day that you catch them, the smaller versions don't have alot of meat on them so only keep the bigger models, they will give account of themselves on just about any beach tackle aswell. As mentioned earlier if the ocean beach is blown out head over to the western side, I can't spend time at fraser without having a session on the jetty at kingfisher bay, it is simply an awsome spot.

Good luck with your trip, looking forward to hearing some reports.

    Cheers Kev

    Re: FRASER

Get your pippies and worms along the beach and get some IQF pillies on the mainland before you go over.

Re: FRASER - WHAT ABOUT PRAWNS

Thank you very much for all your valuable information and advise.

We will be staying in a house at Happy Valley 100 m to the beach we are told.

I thought of bringing some KG of Pillies from (www.##########.com.au) and was wondering if I need to get some PRAWNS as well.

Will PIPIES be around in APRIL..... thought it was only during winter months.

Angha. If you had a small boat, say 12 ft or so and you know how to throw a cast net you could catch all the prawns you would need plus some to eat as they are on in all the creeks north and south of Ungowa, in the Mary river, and the creeks on the islands in the straits. The way things are shaping up I think were in for a good season. Do you think you may need two weeks to try to fit every thing in, and then you have the top half of the island to look at also. Bob.

Wish I could strech to two weeks. Going with infants so my fishing would be limited to very early in the morning and late afternoon.
