I've been targeting bream with the SPs recently and havent been had much sucess So i have decided to try my luck for some flatties..
I have caught a few but never found a real consistent spot. Do you guys know of any decent spots to fish around the bay areas...
(dont want to travel to far) And if you could give me some tips on what plastics to use etc...
The best way to target flathead land based is to look for sand flats with drop off around the edges.
Fish on an out going tide, this is the time when the food is being washed off the sand flat and flathead will sit in the deeper water over the drop off and ambush it.
Start at the shallowest section of the flat and cast around you in a fan like shape, when you have covered that section of water move forward a few steps.
Good things to look for are structure on the flat like rocks, logs and weed beds. Casting at patches of sand in between weed beds can be especially successful.
For plastics user larger jig heads and plastics. I find that a 1/0 size hook on a 1 eighth jig head is good and the 4 inch power minnow or squidgy fish is a good combination. I don't have a particular preference for colour I just try a few until I find one that is working on the day. Brown, green and pink can be successful. As a tip in clearer water use lighter colours and in darker water use darker colours. With flathead remember the bigger the bait the bigger the fish, using small plastics will catch smaller flathead.
If you catch one in an area it is likely that there will be others near by so make sure you give that area a good fish after catching one before moving on.
I don't know any specific spots around there but look in the street directory for bays and small beaches you can access.

Try around the Lota Creek mouth a few hours either side of the runout tide. Park on the esplanade and walk out over the flats. You are a good chance of a flattie there although there is not always size to them. I have also got flounder, whiting & pike on various types and sizes SP's there. Squidgy wrigglers or fish in silver fox, gary glitter, bloodworm or avocado or 3 inch Bekley minnows in Pearl/watermelon, bloodworm or pumkinseed will work ok.
I have also caught a few (up to 50cm) around the rock wall on the Lota side of the Manly boat harbour.

Hay i find the best place to catch flattys is by useing live pike yes thats right pike
me and some mates were goin for queen fish wif lives / pike and we landed more big flaties than queenies
but wif softies i find the best are green bottoms and orange tops of 10cm to 25cm long squidgeises but depends on the tide wif the weight u want

I'll see how the weather hols up this weekend and maybe i'll give it a try.
