    Re: Cobia fishing

Cobia are a very inquisitive fish. They will sometimes come to the surface next to your boat to have a look when you first arrive, with or without something they can 'smell' immediately. So you should have a rig ready to cast to them if that happens.

They often travel in small groups. When you bring in one you will often find the others will follow it to the boat. So have another rig ready for this situation as well.

Have found circle hooks to be very effective for cobia.
Best baits in order are probably livies, dead slimies, dead yakkas, pillies . . . .
They will also come up and take lures when trolling.

Usually with a live bait they will hit and run. With dead baits sometimes they will move off slowly or play with it for a while, so don't be too quick to apply pressure. Especially if you use circle hooks.

Any fish of 25kg or more will put up a dog of a fight. You should expect to be at it for an 1/2-1hr or more even with heavy gear. Your rigging needs to be first class to stand long and hard fights. #

For eating quality I think the 8-12kg fish are the best size.

They look and act like a shark. Some people mistake them as sharks. So, if at night, make doubly sure of what you have on the end.

    Kind regards

    Re: Cobia fishing

Hi as said the old cobe is not to fussy on any good bait be it live or dead just display it properly watch for the first run it will be long and fast maybe 200 mts min you will gain some line and the cobe will come to the top and act like a shark dont be fooled it will look tired too untill you get close to it look out for another good run they take some hanging on to expect the fight to last about 45 min dependind on line class last one i got went gestmated 18 kg on 8 kg gear lasted all of 1 hr

    Re: Cobia fishing

The cobe pic on my profile is an old photo dating back to Nov '98, but still rates as my PB ever fish at 37KG, so I can tell you that it was caught at 4 beacons (yellow marker) in northern morton bay using live bait, floater rigs. Does not make me the expert on Cobes, because it was the only cobia I have ever caught, but on the day what the guys have already said is that they travel in pairs or sml schools. My deckie double hooked up on a 28KG fish we fought for another 2 hours after mine was boated.

They roll like a croc when you sink the gaff into them. The easiest way with my Deckies' fish was to allow the fish to roll, losening your grip on the gaff a little to let it spin in your hand, otherwise I am told they can spin themselves right off the gaff!

I also hear that the verticle jigs account for a few around the M2 at Bribie.
