    Squid Spots?

    Hey guys
I usually catch squid from the manly jetty in winter but since they've changed it the lights dont point into the water and so i need a new spot.
Do u guys know of any landbased spots where i can catch some squid? Im looking to up my bait supply for this winter..
    any help is appreciated
    Thanks

    Re: Squid Spots?

Bait? You use squid for bait??? I don't get the chance - the chairperson of the board of domestic directors won't let me use fresh squid as bait. She prefers to eat it. Fortunately squid heads aren't on the menu and they make really good, tough baits that sweetlip and snapper love to eat and the pickers can't remove from a hook.

Anyway, unfortunately I don't have an alternative spot for squid south of the river. If anyone has any suggestions, I would like to know as well. I think I remember seeing a post somewhere talking about the Victoria Point jetty, but that is a bit ao a drive.

    Thanks.

    Re: Squid Spots?

I came in from Peel Island one night to the ramp on the northern side of Victoria Point and there was a guy spearing squid from the sides of the boat ramp. The tide was full so there was a bit of depth beside the ramp and it was winter so the squid were around the western side of the bay. He was doing alright too. It was the first (and only) time I've seen anyone catching squid by throwing a fish spear at them.

    Re: Squid Spots?

Pole along or row quietly in the shallow clear water at night with a broard light and a spear and scoop and you will get all the squid you want.
Don't use a spot light just a soft broard light, we had a kero "Miller" Pressure light for years but it is long gone.

Spear the ones on the bottom and net the ones on top.

Along the edges of the "Bribie Ledge" was a good spot at low tide.

Just before you go jew fishing.

    Re: Squid Spots?

Used to handspear off the Palm Island Jetty for squid. #Outdone quite a few locals too. #Not uncommon to take home 20 odd all about a foot long to throw on the bbq prior to a swim in the chilli sauce followed by a nice cruise down my throat. #Quite privilaged those squid - to give up their lives to provide such joy for myself and a few mates. #
Any fishing is good fishing (should probably say Any fishing is...probably going to be illegal soon)

    Re: Squid Spots?

take a stroll along all jetties and bridges looking for the telltale ink everywhere you could also try using a cyalume stick off your jetty

    Re: Squid Spots?

i've been out fishing lately around a bridge that has lights, and is known for prawns, we were fishing and saw heaps of activity and a couple of things that looked like squid, if it was squid would squid jibs be the best way to go about catching them?

    cheers

    Re: Squid Spots?

It would appear they are light attracted. If one used a squid jig with a small cyalume attacehd would this be effective??
Novice here as far as squid-jigging goes.

    Re: Squid Spots?

The Shornecliffe and Woody point jetties are great squid spots in the winter time, but I doubt you would get any yet. If you want squid at this time of year you would need to get over to the inside of Moreton and work your jigs over the weed beds on the inside of the island.

    Re: Squid Spots?

Yeah the shorncliffe jetty goes alright for squid, have caught some nice flathead off there too you will probablly have to fight for a good spot near light though.. I know some people lower there gas lanterns down on a rope to get the light on the water too

    Cheers

    Re: Squid Spots?

I met my first and only vampire on Shornecliff jetty while squidding about 3 years ago. Interesting chap who'd cured himself of cancer with a magic bath, had problems with sunlight and expanded at length on reasons why, and liked to drink blood. Only discussed fish blood, no people blood.

One of the few times I've been pleased to have been fishing in a crowded spot.

The possies at the end seemed back then to attract territorial types with lots of rods who were prepared to try to heavy kids who were there earlier, but who didn't seem too interested in heavying me at 120kg.
