Howdy all,

I know this topic is raised every now and then, but in recent times I've considered getting into SP's. I've always been a determined bait fisho, but since buying another light outfit just recently (stradic 2500 and 2-4kg stick) I want to give the SP's a go. Would mainly be looking at flicking around Peel, Rainbow Channel, Green, Mud etc for squire and sweeties, as well as some creek stuff for bream, flatties etc. What size jigheads and plastics are required? Are there any particular patterns/colours/makes that work particularly well in these areas of the bay? Are they still effective at night? Are different patterns/colours/makes required for night work?

As far as I know a basic cast, let it sink, twitch twitch, reel a little, twitch twitch type action is required. Anything else worthy of note?

Gday Ben. Most of the bays fish pretty much the same in the bay...

Jigheads
Start with 1/8 Oz and if there is a fair bit of current, go to 1/4 or 1/2 Oz

Plastics

Zooms seem to be pretty good from all the reports out there. Watermelon & Baby Bass go well (These are the colours for night time too ). There is also a colour called Albino in this range that look great for mid-day missions...

Salt-Water Assassins are the same, and Berkley Power Minnows in 3" - 5" work really well. I actually had the best session of my life with Cheech out there using a 3" Pearl Blue Power Minnow on 1/8 Oz jighead. Caught quite a few fish that day...

Technique

There are 2 main schools of thought with this.
1) Twitching - This is what you've described. Twitch it up a bit because they normally hit on the drop.
2) Lift & drop - Essentially cast ahead of the drifting boat. Lift the rod tip up about 1-2 ft, then drop the plastic back down while winding up slack.



It's all great fun mate. Best thing to do is just get out there and give it a go! Try and see if you can get a ride with someone who knows the tricks (All the Wello boys seem to be gods at the moment!!!) and learn everything you can off them.

Thanks a lot for the replies guys. Yeah I've observed over time of a few individuals who fish Wellington Point etc and have noticed them really master their technique superbly. I'm heading over around Peel for an overnighter tonight so might go and pick up some rubbers and see how I go.

EDIT: Just went and picked up some 1/8 and 1/4 jigheads and some Atomic 3in minnows in pearl. Seems the Berkley range is very popular - BCF at Capalaba cleaned out of stock in the popular ones.

I for one am sorry you feel this way - I tried to catch decent snapper in the bay for years on bait, and my favourite starting spot was harries Arty where I caught lots of undersized stuff . Now, I rock up amoungst all the bait fishos (usually downstream - their bait is my burley ) and manage to catch 4 or 5 legal fish in a session on SP's. I still have molten drag washer stains on my favourite fishing shirt from one unstoppable there on SPs.

Follow Fishin Dan's advice ( mate I always agree with you) and you WILL catch decent fish in the bay, it's only a matter of when, provided you follow all the other rules such as light flurocarbon leaders etc.

I agree with wow- it's all about compromose. Those who dont then they wont learn and time marches on. Just had a good run on my first day on sp's, i'll throw a report up in the saltwater estuary section.

i do sum estuary fishing with sp for flathead and bream... and 3" power minnows in berkley powerbaits range work best as an all rounder with as lighter jig hed as possible
