Hey guys
I need some help with catching VERY finnicky bream.
IF you have any tips on retrieves and lures to use it be good.
Im landbased and fishing around raby bay canals, Ive been throwing bread around the pontoons and the bream come out from under the pontoon and take the bread, but when the lure comes near they always swim away...
Any help would be great
Thanks
Im trying to just stick to lures as i really wanna catch some bream on em
Ive been using a lot of different SPs like- Gulp 3inch minnow in pumpkinseed and smelt, Gulp 2inch grubs in pumpkinseed, 2inch powerbait grubs in bloodworm, Snapbacks in watermelon and a vairety of colours in the bassminnows...
I've used different weights from weightless , 1/32, 1/16 1/8.
I think that its something to do with my retrieve??
Thanks
nah what i mean is the fish are coming out and catching your reflection on the water surface,,,,you dont give any picture on the time of day etc so its just a thought,,,,bream like the undercover protection that a pontoon offers to congregate under,,,,,throwing a bread berley out is enticing them to come out and do a smash and grab,,, but not keen enough to attack your sp's,,,,
if they get skittish for any reason,,, its a game of who can outwait the other
Use to have alot of success with big bream hiding under the pontoons down there by using very light mono, a pencil float and a small hook. Adjust float trace to hang just beneath the underside of the pontoon and use a few split shot sinkers crimped near the hook. You'd be surprised what's under those pontoons that will come charging out for a quick feed.
try an unweighted white fly. Just tie it onto your outfit (no flyrod required) and let it drift with the bread. However if your set catching it with a lure then i suggest dawn and dusk when the suns not so bright.
If using plastics, you want as light as possible (Weightless is good), and you want to get it under the pontoon if possible. If you can't get it underneath, it should hit the pontoon where the top of the water is so it drifts down right next to the edge of the pontoon. The current may then take it up underneath...
Look for darker patches (shadows) and as previously stated, cast further away and stay out of sight. Just try crouching down...
Let the plastic pause for a fair while before small twitches, then pause again.
If using hardbodies, then you need to make sure the lure gets down to where the fish are. It may mean casting further than where you want it to be, and cranking it down. This means the lure is down where it needs to be when it gets to where the fish are hiding.
I'm assuming at Raby Bay you are talking about that pontoon with the gate leading down onto it... If so, try casting in underneath the pathways, around the moored boats, etc. You will probably have better luck.
Take photos of your catch, and let us all know how you go!
Leader mate, 2.7kilo is the go in the gillies flurocarbon.
I've had some great fun in those canals on the bream, sometimes theres a big flatty on to bust that flimsy leader though, but thats the fun of fishing light.
Thanks for the help guys
I went down there on monday and wednesday and d some white plastics weightless when the bream were taking the bread..
I managed 3 fish in the 2 days so i made a improvement...
I was fishing from around 10am to 4pm and got the fish in the morning and arvo,
They didnt seem to want to come out during the day...
I've been using 4lb FINS braid and 6lb Yamatoyo leader so i think im fishing light enough..
Oh well, im going to the gold coast for the weekend and hopefully i'l get some time to catch a few of the bream over there, those bream arent as finicky as the raby bay ones so it should be fun
