hey guys,
just wondering what the best way to rig up shark traces is? usually i just use a single hook rig, but i want to find out how to rig a doulbe hook rig properly? ive tried making some stinger rigs with a live bait hook at the front and a treble at the back (i realise the treble prob isnt right, but its all i had and i thought id give it a go anyway). i havent had a chance to use then yet, but it looks like it doesnt quite sit right, this is how it goes:
swivel- length of trace- live bait hook in the middle of trace created by loop made from xtra crimp in trace- treble at end.
im only goin for small shaks, bullies and bronzies up to bout 6 foot.
does this sound ok? if there is any other suggestions or ideas i would greatly appreciate it. Cheers TJ
anyway when i use a double rig for biger sharks i use a 500lb swivel on end then crimp it to the trace of about 800lb then have a running hook, either 10/0 or 12/0 gamakatsu mega bait hook on the trace, followed buy another of those hooks at the end of the trace.... if you are going to rig it up like this becarefull u put the running hook on the rite way like the top picture below.... it is easy to up the running hook on the wrong way like the bottom picture.... if using biger baits for bigger sharks i always double crimp just for that added confidence in your tackle
after adding the swivel and 2 hooks to the trace and double crimping i coat the hole trace in electrical tape and keep it nice an tight around the trace so that no electrical current can be felt by the shark.
this can take about 45mins to complete and cost about $2 for the swivel (if bought nice and cheap of ebay) $1 per metre of trace (when bought from bakers industrial on kingsford smith drive) $2 for the electrical tape around $1 for 4 of the 2.6mm crimps when bought cheap off ebay (i bought a pack of 100 crimps for $22.50) and $7 for 2 gamakatsu mega bait hooks from amart all sports (though u can purchase much cheeper 12/0 hooks) so all up no more then around $10 if u budget it nicely
also when im using big baits it can take hours before it gets touched, as i only use live baits for the brisbane river because the sharks vision is restriced and it uses its senses to find food i only put the hooks through the skin and put one hook on each side when its done properly the fish almost has all chance to survive until being eaten...
yeah man that was me, with dave and andrew. cheers for the info. u know wat ur doin for the brizzy river comp yet, bretts? i spose ur gunnas blow us all out of the water with another of those awsome kt salmon!!
lol yeh we r stayin at bretts for most of it targeting sharks salmon and catfish then going for a bit of sp targeting bream... hopefully we get an entry for each division....
