I'm new at this whole caper, but I love catching prawns with my cast net. The best I've done is 20 in one cast. I was so happy I almost wet myself. I'd love to hear of the best catches other ausfishers have had. Come on and tell me all about it.![]()

About 1996 I was headed out through Horizon Shores for a fish, not for prawns, and could barely get through all the boats casting their nets. Always carried a small 6" bait net (full of holes) and decided to join them. 9.5 Kilos for 2 hours work with a pathetically undergunned net, no top pocket, was the best I have ever experienced.
Seldom got onto them anywhere near that day, and not allowed to cast net in Horizon Shores anymore.

Sadly, it is eight. I got 4 catfish once, too. Thought I was onto the mother lode. That was fun untangling.
If you hit a good patch you can get a kilo in a single throw, but there's now a bag limit (thanks to the activities of the yellow raincoat brigade), so how many you could catch will remain a mystery.

Cheers
Haven't been cast netting for long, but in the short time I think I have caught two prawns with one cast.

Rando, if it wasn't an expensive net, I reckon I would throw it back and let them keep it!!!

Back home in Mackay up a small creek I once got 138 prawns in one cast. They were all small (5 cms max) and only good for bait but that was all I was chasing as I don't eat them. This was probably 15+ years ago. Back then it was not uncommon for me and my brother to get a couple of bucketfulls and freeze them in packets so we didn't have to buy them.
Ah the good old days. Man I am sounding old.

Years ago in the mouth of the newport canals we came across a large school of banana prawns schooled up on the surface, my brother had a draw string cast net and casted it into the bulk of the school. The prawns showered everywhere and his net was that full it wouldnt sink. We had that many in one cast we had trouble getting the net in, and they were large prawns too. That was before any limits were introduced...
wow, casting onto a school of prawns would be the ultimate. I've heard of a wave of prawns going past a mates boat , or so he thinks they were. He reckons they were being chased by something? has anyone else had a similar experience??
