    Re: Gar

yeh hahah i love it when ther swimmin like a marlin with the snout out of the water tail walking! theyd fight like a marlin to if u had 0.5lb mono! i remember a time cast netting they were everywher with the snouts out and caught a ton in the net and only needed one cast to get that days bait.... come to think about it it was at mission point in the pumistone passage... i dunno what end that its at :S but it was across from donnybrook and further north and it had a flat rock and sandy bottom and was just off the channel and sheltered from any current and waves as it was like a sand point and one side was wavie and the other was calm... i dunno if this enough info but ull no when u come near them they sprint off with there heads out which makes it easy

    cheers, troy

#6 or #8 jig rig with very small bits of gar flesh/anything on the tip of each hook, small sinker on the bottom, sometimes i will use a small spinner instead of the sinker, cast out lifting the rig to the surface keeping the top hook near the surface dropping your rod tip down to let the jig sink a meter or so drag through the burley and bobs your uncle. I find casting out wide bring in the larger gar.

I have observed some use a float on the end of the rig and at the top thus keep the hooks near the surface. I prefer my method it can also be dropped to the bottom and bounced in to get a slimey or yakka if they are around.

My favorite burley for gar is bran with a bit of tuna oil, the tuna oil is not really needed most of the time but i believe it helps to attract the fish you then send your gar bait out for .

Gars are great bait live or not.

There's a report in the estuary section from last week of where I was getting them out the back of currimundi lake. The rigs described already should work for you, bread or small bits of fish will normally tempt them, just make sure you have small hooks and can keep the bait near the surface.

Very top or very bottom of the tide, weed beds end of Nelson st , out from the sea scouts shed.

Cut fresh bread crust into bits about 3mm wide , do not squash it, fish on a # 10 short shank under a float
