Re: spottie mackrel info
It's getting a bit on for spotties on the Gold Coast.
When we target them we use one of 3 methods.
Spinning, baiting or towing.
Spinning we use slugs of around 40g. chuck them out & wind them back as fast as you can. Best reel for this sort of work IMO is the Shimano TSS4. Use a rod of about 8ft aswell.
Baiting we use pillies on a short wire trace with a hook of around 4/0 in size. Trace size is 27lb. YOu can fish the baits under floats or just let them woft down the water column, its up to you. Just have your baits when you start at different depths until you find where the fish are sitting.
Towing- The ever reliable pillie on gang hooks with a squid skirt over the top. Slow troll these until you find the fish, then keep going over the same area. Havinga down rigger is a good option as well. Make sure your baits do not spin, before letting right out the back.

Re: spottie mackrel info
Maybe worth trolling some high speed (8 - 10 Knots) lures as well. Rapala CD20's & Halco laser pro's work well.
Where do you launch from?
