    Cod ID???

Caught this little cod (and plenty more) while on holiday at Townsville over Easter. I'm not sure what variety he is though. We caught plenty of Orange-spotted Cod, but this other variety have dark spots and the distinct bands of vertical colour down their back. Any ideas?

    Re: Cod ID???

I've been looking through Grant's, and the possibilites I've found are Coral Cod and Morgan's Cod. I'm really not sure though. They pretty much have the same side on profile and the Orange-spotted variety, but the description for the Coral Cod describes the "black saddles" of colour...

Looks like what we call a plain old "estuary cod" mate.

    Re: Cod ID???

    thanks for the replies fellas

I discounted this fish being an Estuary Cod (also known as orange-spotted cod) as this little fella has black spots. Grant doesn't mention the Estuary/Orange-spotted Cod to have a colour variation with dark spots.

Also the pic I have for the Black-spotted Cod shows the spots to be very large in proportion to the rest of the fish, not like the Estuary Cod at all. Thats why I'm puzzled: the spots are the wrong colour.

    Re: Cod ID???

Just had a look in several books.
I would say positivly a Morgans cod, with juvenile coloring.
Morgans and gold spots (although different species) are roughly bundled together in the term estuary cod by us laymen.
    Definatly not coral cod.

we used to treat these as a pest when i was up there years ago,,, probably still the same now,,,,but yes the locals back then called them estuary cod,,, but i believe morgans may be the right handle,,,,,,

    Re: Cod ID???

Thanks for the comments guys. I too was leaning towards the Morgan's Cod. After catching one of these little guys and then an Orange-spotted Cod straight after, they are so remarkably different looking, I new they had to be another specie!

All the cod we caught were about this size, with a few up to 30cm or so, from a little marina in Townsville. We were hoping to get offshore and chase some serious fish, but if it was pouring down rain, it was blowing a gale. All the rivers and streams were flooded, so no chasing Junglies or Sooties either. The cod kept our casting arms busy

I'll post a report for the trip some time soon.

    Cheers
    Matt
