Use whichever bait you intend to fish with (lettuce or weed) and chop it up very finely and mix with some wet sand. Throw out a couple of handfuls when you first start and then just a bit every now and then.
Thats what i was using, i am going to ad some pollard and stale bread (crumbed up) to my mix this weekend.
Yes they have been quite good down here, But there are a lot and i mean a lot of Juviniles hanging around.
hopefully the bronzies will come in soon. But when they do i hope the trawlers don't catch on to them.
Fishn-ads, I actually caught my first Blackfish at Iluka many years ago aged 9 i think from memory. My Gradfather
taught me how. but it had been a long time between since the last time a actually targeted them seriously.
When i found out i was in a good area for them i broke out my gear and dusted it all off. have already scored a few good ones.
At my VERY secret Spot X for luderick in Moreton Bay (which I fish just once or twice a year) I bring the fish around (believe it or not) by running the mower over a section of green lawn (if you have one) and taking half a binful of fresh grass clippings with me on the boat. These are then dispersed by the handful into the current; because they are still wet they sink and disperse well through the water column and quite quickly draw a crowd. I don't know if the luderick actually eat much of the grass but it sure brings them around at this location. I then ease back on the grass and start fishing the run, only throwing a handfull of grass now and then to keep them interested. Beats having to use precious weed (if you can't collect your own) as berley
Cheers Freeeedom
LOL @ freeedom...not the first time Ive heard that... as said stick with fine shreddings of the tpe of weed ur using for bait mixed with sand..... adding bread is OK but IMO it will attract pesky happy moments more, small bream and mullet.... just make sure the weed is fine and not to heavy in the mix or ull be feeding them...
off the ocean rocks scrape the cabbage from the ledge ur fishing off... easy
Hi, My dear ol' grandpa used to use chopped weed or cabbage, wet sand and a few finely chopped blood worms. Used to swear by it. We were never short of a feed.
Cheers
Eric
I use the weed you are fishing with , chop it finely and then leave it in a bucket with a few inches of ocean for a day so it is nice and smelly.
Add a loaf of fresh bread and sand, mix until it is a fairly dry paste.
Fish the run out, Gold coast canals where there is rock and 8 foot or so of water close to the bank.
I cant give exact spots , but there are a few and they are very productive during winter.
I don't think many people target them around there.
ATM the blackfish have gone a little quiet but with any luck they will come back on very soon.
A chap i was talking to on the weekend seems to beleive that they had just sporned or were sporning
last weekend and therefore off the chew. Sunday had me down at the wharfe in the afternoon
during high tide. Looking around for new spots as well, came across a wonderfull display of
small blackfish feeding in the strap weed. They ranged from an estimated 2in to 4in in length, feeding
by grabbing the weed between there mouths and turning sideways, scraping the algae of the weed.
this was very mesmerising i only wish i had a video camera to capture it.
Just thought you all might like to hear about that one.
Cheers again for the advice, will be putting it all to use very soon
I'm down at Nowra, NSW - fishing for Black Fish in the Greenwell pt area, But i see from your profile your
up in SE QLD? I use to hail from up there. don't get much of a chance to get home much these days,
but do try to get up there over the Xmas Break etc. This year however will probably out due to
other commitments in mid to late Jan. So i will be looking to head up about March Next year for a couple
of weeks. maybe then would be a good chance to catch up and do some fishing.
Found this(below) on another site in their fish file. the distribution map definately showed a large area of Qld was covered, but i only knew of a few places that they were regularily caught. One of them was in and around some of the islands and sunken walls of the pin. I am sure there are plenty more, just have to keep your eye out for likely locations etc. oh year as you also said keep an eye out for seahunt - or maybe you two should team up and give them a crack and dust of your gear ?
cheers again

luderick (blackfish, nigger, darky) [girella tricuspidata]
Girella tricuspidata
Size 500g - 2kg.
Habitat Luderick are most common along the eastern seaboard of Australia particularly the estuarine and inshore coastal waters of N.S.W. Their distribution extends as far north as Qld., south west into S.A. and northern Tas. Luderick can be found in tidal rivers and lakes, estuaries, bays, harbors and off rocky foreshores. They feed close to rocks beneath floating weed and congregate along the lower reaches of estuaries that are open to the sea, river break walls, along rocky coastal shorelines, sea wall rocks, jetties and bridges. Luderick are mid water feeders found from 4m to the surface and occasionally deeper.
Qualities Herbivorous species. Great sport fish which is hard to hook and offers a good fight to land.
Record Australian record 3.884kg
Best Bait
bait: Bass Yabbies (nippers), Beach worm, Blood worm, Cabbage weed, Cunjevoi, Sand worm
Other: Lettuce/cabbage weed: leafy bright green cabbage that grows on rock platforms
Tackle
Link: 6kg main line with a 3.5kg 1m or less trace.
Hook: No.4 - 10 Mustad 540 Viking.
Rig: Long rod. Floated (quill float) bait set to depth of 1m.
More info: Uni Knot
Hints Early morning fish feed close to rocks. Delay setting hook after bite ensuring hookup. Set float with weight so it is nearly under the water allowing the fish to sink the float easily upon strike. Set bait depth to about 1m off rocks, sometimes shallower in estuaries. Fish respond to berley of chopped weed about 1cm lengths mixed with sand or bread, bran, pollard and minced prawn. Kick local weed off rocks into wash. Fish can be very timid in clear water. Do not use frozen weeds. Essentially a vegetarian but occasionally takes marine worm, prawn and nippers. Use a small hook to suit fishes small mouth.
Yeah Covert.. have seen the mcaught at the pin, fished the seaway for them but never really seen n e one fishing the canals for them...... dont mind heading down to tweed also... have caught some good sized fish down there... much to the disgust of some of the older locals
