Thread: How do you care for your rods ?

Re: How do you care for your rods ?

I take my rods in the shower with me when I get home & give them a light shower in the warm water(drag screwed up tight), then give them a flick & wipe down after getting out. Then stand up in the rod rack in the spare bedroom( sorry the tackle cave, just like bundylundy).

I also give the rods & reels a spray with tackle guard every 6 months & wipe excess off with a cloth.

Lol love the shower idea I wash down wiht a hose all rods and reels after use, give them a shake to get most of the water off them then I get the lanox or lanolin out and spray each runner and the entire reel with the stuff. Works great at stopping water getting into your reels and rust forming on your runners if you dont get every bit of water off them. Also takes way less time then wiping down your rod with the good tea towel Althogh that can be good as you can find marks and scratches on the rod when wiping it down in stead of having your rod snap the next time you get a good fish on!!

    cheers

    Awesome replies.

been thinking of what to do with my loft area for some time now. I think it's high time I layed it out as a "tackle shop" and brought the gear indoors.

Seems I'll have to take my boat rods in the shower too - been there and done that with the fly rods.

Wow - after a long trip (10 days +) I could end up showering with lets see -

12 wt, 10wt, 9 wt, 7wt (two piece rods) - therefore 8 "rods", plus 8 boat rods - 4 trolling, two bait sticks, and two spinning rods, and I might as well throw in the gaff.

Just hope I don't slip on the soap . Could be an expensive fall.

All good advise, to keep your rods like new, I revarnish every year as well as cleaning all eyes with a dremel wire brush as in salt water you get a build up of corrosion after a while and this ends up corroding your eyes. Reels are stripped annually and cleaned and oiled/greased when I re assemble.

Ex Durbanite (left 97) spent 7 years in NZ(enjoyed the fly fishing there) and now in gods country(Hervey Bay) trying to catch some decent fish. I was a member of Durban Ski Boat Club for about 10 years, won the Umchlanga Festival in 88. Still have some mates there but some are here as well.

You lived in the last outpost !! Banana boy - and you've got the audacity calling me a redneck.

Good to know there's someone around that knows the SA conditions well.

Have you heard that Natal rod and reel have lost their clubhouse and rights to launch at the beach site ? Very sad - nowadays everyone has to go out the harbour down the ramp at the yacht mole - takes a bit of the thrill away from surf launching.

Re: How do you care for your rods ?

    Hi Mike
I am pretty friendly with one or two fellas still in the club and basically the undersea club, paddle ski club and Durban Ski Boat Club all have to move, or probably have done so already for redevelopment of the whole area. There is a large water entertainment park, hotels and developments all zoned for the whole point area. The old prison has been developed into apartments. All fisherman have to be licenced for offshore, beach and basically all fishing now. Many of the regulations are different and geared towards revenue or employment for specific races. A website that you can keep up to date is www.iol.co.za. So much for progress.
    Regards
    Paul.
