quick hose then i let them air dry. Every now and then i spray some wd40 into the thread of on the reel seat and give the cork grips a light sand to get rid of that polished feeling.
After fishing in salt water, I wash em down with warm soapy water and give them a wipe over with baby oil on a cloth, same with reels. I check the guides cause I have a bad habit of smacking the rod into the rocks. In freshwater I wipe the mud of them and chuck em back in the rack.
Mist spray with hose, warm soapy water, rinse and leave in sun until dry. Every couple of trips I pull spool off and apply some reel grease around the shaft and spray wd 40 on all exposed parts. I have not had to repair a reel for over11 years so its either good luck or maybe doing that little bit extra pays off?
I put a new coat of varnish on one, and replaced the guides on the other, first time I've done anything but chuck em in the shed in 25 years, does that that count as maintenance?
Always hose mine down when I come home from fishing. If there is fish slime or bait etc on the grips or rod, I'll give them a wash with warm soapy water before hosing and then air drying. An occasional wipe over the real seats with a silicon rag helps too. I store all my rods in a rack in my tackle room(spare bedroom ). Mum rekoned it looked like a tackle shop last time she visited.
I make sure drags are backed off and no line pressure on the rod. I also do my own rod repairs to keep them in good working order. The 6 P's means less chance of a failure due to lack of mtce next time out fishing.
When travelling long distances, I always remove the reel ang store the rod in a cloth bag. If there is a chance they could be knocked around, I then put them into a PVC tube.
I wash down with warm soapy water rinse towel dry and the next day i use a product by CRC called tackle gard its made specifically for rods and reels and its safe to use on your line, grips etc.
