I've been told by a mate that you aren't allowed to use old oil bottles for crab pot floats anymore (in QLD). Is that right? If so, can other plastic bottles still be used? If not, what can be used? Would appreciate any advice.
PS. Only been a member for about a week and still exploring this great site. Congratulations and thanks to all concerned (Administrators and members alike) for your dedication to making this site what it is ....EXCELLENT.
I use the round ball floats with a line of parachute cord tied through the centre in a loop. On my crab pot ropes I use the quick release clips, this allows me to lie the pots flat in the boat and pull out a float and clip it on as I through pots in.

Rob
as far as i know crab pot floats must be " a light coloured float not less than 15 cm in any dimension with the name of the owner clearly inscibed on it" also the pot itself must have "an identifying tag tag bearing the surname and address of the owner" no mention of oil bottles in the DPI-F guide although i know for sure 2 litre milk bottles dont comply and as most oil bottles are dark coloured and not 15 cm in any dimension i imagine they would be out too, besides who wants to pollute there crabbing grounds?
freshwater, for yabby traps and the like, you cannot use oil bottles because of the potiontal impact of a small oil spill on a relatively closed system can be disastrous but a 2 litre milk container is allowed but only in the fresh.
prefered floats are the large ball types or square ones that you can purchase from tackle shops
hope this helps
oil bottles are out. the floats need to be 150mm diameter any side, bottles are too small in most cases. the round styrafoam floats are the way to go, they're the right size. check out the MSQ safety handbook for the regs.
