    Fishing records

    Hi Folks,
Now that I'm living on the Sunshine Coast I can do some serious fishing and will now be able to keep accurate records of what I caught when etc.
My question to you fishing trackers is: Apart from recording the date, location, tide and moon phase and species caught, what other information do you consider is essential to help maximise your catch rate. I usually stick to fishing the surf and estuary around the Maroochydore area.
Looking forward to some helpful advice and wisdom as usual.

    G'day
I'd even reference the weather... overcast or nowt, recent rain, whatever and i think even water temperature would be good to know.

    Re: Fishing records

Here is what I have been doing for many years. It is much easier now with cheap digital equipment.
    Date of trip
Barometric pressure and whether rising or falling.
State of tide and whether making or ebbing and size of tide.
    Water temperature
Air temperature at start and finish
    Cloudy or fine.
    Moon phase.
Direction of wind and nominal strength. ie: light medium strong etc.
    Time start and finish.
Species caught and on what bait.
How many undersize fish caught, type and time.
Type of bite for each spcies. Ie: pickey, savage etc. Bite types can change across a session and certainly between baits.
General notes as to when most fish were caught. This is especially valuable if you have fished a long session because you might find a cluster at one time or another. You then work through the probable reason.
General season notes; has it rained recently, drought, flood etc.

In the end you punch the dat into the computer and you will come up with probbabilities.

for estuary if theres fixed structure around - note where you were casting...

similar for the beach make sure you note if you were fishing in the wash, in a hole etc...

most important things I've found to keep track of on the beach (and most apply to the estuary too - besides the swell) are light levels, swell (size more important than direction), structure (dependant on swell in previous days), relative tide height ie. was it the biggest high/low of the month (closely related to light levels when fishing at night), wind direction and strength (closely related to relative temperature differences between land and sea), presence/absence of bio-luminescence (glowing algae in the water)

also note any other stuff thats out of the ordinary - eg down here presence of bubble weed and bluebottles indicates warm water, presence of bait and surface activity etc...
