hi all, im heading up too hearvey bay on tuesday and was just wondering if anyone else has fished roy rufus artificial reef before. ive heard that you can get some pretty decent fish from here at times. any hints on how to fish at this spot and what i can expect too catch would be great, any other good places too fish in hearvy bay would allso be good help.
gday bassbuster, the "arti" (as known by locals) has been firing lately with everything from plagics to lots of reef species, and snapper in the late arvo-night. as usual the best times are 2 hours before/ after tides for the reef species, and the snapper seem to like a raging current. The best bait is livebait here because the fish are very human- wary and will usually turn their nose up at dead bait( usually). You can get livies from around the beacons( yakkas, pike , ect, ) which work well. make sure you have a good anchor , because the water funnels through there at a good rate , and can be diffcult to hook up. You cannot miss the arti because it usually has boats all over it, , and when you get there, if you troll around slowly you will find heaps of ground yourself.
G'Day B.B.
I have fished the RR artificial a few times, but only in Summer - never in winter. I know they get squire/snapper in winter, & sometimes cod and jew.
The tide runs really hard here at times, so it is best fished an hour or so each side of the turn one the bigger tides, or a couple of hours each way on smaller tides.
In summer one of the most common fish is what the locals call "coral bream" - known elswhere as grass sweetlip, or grassies - though I think it's really one of the emperor family ???. (go figure that one). But I don't know if it is around in Winter.
If you have a GPS, duck into a tackle shop or boatshop and see if you can buy a copy of a little booklet called the " Let's go fishing - Top Spots & GPS marks - Town of 1770 to the Sunshine Coast " Big name for a little book.
I don't know if it's still available, but it was well worth the $4 that I paid for mine a couple of years ago.
It shows most of the different wrecks etc that make up the artificial.
You may already know this - but in case you don't - the RR reef is not one continuous area of reef. The wrecks, tyres, car bodies etc. are scattered over a fairly wide area with lots of flat sandy bottom in between them.
The first time I went there with only land marks, I couldn't find it because I didn't know this. There were other boats in the area at the time, but they were all spread out - now I know why.
Hope at least some of this is helpfull.
Cheers, Deegee.
P.S. I have repeated some of what Insideout has already said - but he must have posted his reply while I was typing mine ( SLOWLY)
I fish the measured mile area of the reef, out around the 16 - 18 mt deep mark. The mile is easily seen on the eastern shore of Big Woody with the two big white markers, one at each end of the mile.
Just cruise around and find the rises and drop offs of the structures, and you will usually get good fish.
We caught heaps of sweetlip, squire and reefies at Easter. Going back at xmas for 3 weeks.
Its one of the better reefs IMHO. I have had as much success with dead baits as livies and sp's.
