    Darwin fishing ?

Gday ausfishers, would anyone be able to give any advise on fishing locations in Darwin?. I expect it would be good any where compared to brisbane. I was thinking of trying the rock wall near the navy base in town?. I will be here for the next three months with work then back to Brissy can't wait to wet a line.

    cheers chillers

    Re: Darwin fishing ?

hay mate i love darwin fishing i youst to live there for to years i guess you can say thats what realy getting me into fishing.

last year i went to darwin for a 2 week holiday

i went fishing in many diffrent places useing sp and cromeys,

if you go to stokes hill walf there is a restrount jsut befor you go onto the walf and there a light shining into the water witch is attraction the bait fish, you get a few barra under there every night, when trying to catch them goo with a 4 inch powerbait in a sliver colour its looks like lil gar thats are scholling up under the light,

my favrout place to fish in darwin is at four hill walf you can kida walk under the walf , and walk you to ur left. Go there about 1 30 hours befor the high tide and there are heaps of quinneys chasing the bait about 50 to 100 meters for the rock . when trying to get them use a chromey and wind as fast as you can wind you will get a few when there come in close when the tide is on its way out chasing the bait fish

on the way out of the tide there are some nice little golden trevally come in a chase the bait fish when trying to catch them use a 3 inch power bait and colour will do and you will cathc heaps of trev's i think i got about 20 one time

hope thats help with ur trip to darwin

Chillers, mate I reckon Darwins great too. Been up there myself for work on accasions and always get a fish in. The Navy base you are talking about is a great landbased option off the rockwall. You're not allowed to fish on the harbourside though. Never mind that though.

Floating unweighted baits or as lightly weighted as possible in close to the rockwall dropoffs will ensure some monster Jacks and good dew. Also get your standard Fingermark/golden snapper, barra, thready's etc. Mornings see some large queenies and trevs schooling up around the bait boils which gather there and I've caught a few on poppers. Get your gear ready mate.

    Re: Darwin fishing ?

If you want I can provide you with Waypoints if you have acess to a boat. Don't fish near the navy base as you will attract unwanted attentioln, they have siemic equipment based near the wall now and people lines and ancjorers where pulling it apart, so they had to close that area for fishing. They might try you for target practice.

Land based fishing in darwin can be very difficult, If you take the time to get live bait and fish in the evenings you will get barra at most places and salmon, Buffalo creek is worth exploring for barra and salmon on lures and live bait and there are laot of muddies in buff creek due to the treament plant at the top, i eat the crabs from buff creek, only glow for a day or two afterwards.

Email me at bcav4114@bigpond.net.au. I check this about once a week and i will forward you my GPS track Maker (free mapping program) map with all my waypoints.

    Land based
    Chanell island bridge
Channel island boat ramp and surounds\
    buff creek
Dundee beach (better off hiring a boat)
Ferrie to mandorah, fish off mandorah wharf
Off the rocks at East point
Gun Point beach for small whiting, salmon on livre bait, Beach ecosystem has been destroyed by the CLEVER people who race there bikes and 4wds up and down the beach, nothing like it used to be,

Good luck and have a ball, Make sure you drink a beer from every pub in darwin, just becuase.

    Re: Darwin fishing ?

    Chillers,

    I'm playing devils advocate here.

Jewmaster, richieboy, mat_anderson: jeez I wish I met you guys during my 5 years in Darwin! I found fishing the harbour downright impossible - although I suspect I might have a better shot now with a little more experience.

Bottom line Chillers: you have up to 7m tide racing in and out of the harbour - that means the bait moves quickly, which means the predators move quickly unless you have structure like the wharves. The wharves, the rock walls, the creeks, the bridges are all the most enticing fish-holding structures you'll have seen. What I'm getting to here is choice - too much of it. My suggestion: keep it really simple - the wharves sound like the best shot but you'll have plenty of other fishos gunning for the same spots as well as ships. They probably still unload sulphur on the main publically open wharf. I've also seen submarines berthed at where the hottest fishing spot is.

What the other guys (above) said is true but take ther mention of tides seriously. Often you'll only have an hour of feeding at any one place.

Best of luck and keep us posted

    Mozza

PS And whatever you do don't park you car on the ski/trailorboat club boatramp at low tide and go for a walk - we had a meal down there one evening when two tourists came to ask for help because the hire car was 2m under water!!

    Re: Darwin fishing ?

I went to Stokes Hill Wharf last night for a look i went right out to the far restaurants and seen a heap of barra there feeding from the scraps that was thrown to them from diners, sadly not allowed to fish there. Mozza i am checking all the wharfs and rock walls each afternoon while waiting for my rods hopeing to get a feel for each.

Ando is the restaurant you are talking about the very first one on the left?.

ps: stills no rods yet hopefully tomorrow and Ian thanks heaps for your help.

    Re: Darwin fishing ?

Your not aloud to fish there when there are diners, if you wander down after midnight, catch some ;ive squid and fish under the light or in the gap between the two wharfcs att he end, Big Jewfish have been caught from the end of the wharf, live bait and late night only.
