    Re: washing boat/outboard

Cheech, I live in the Pine Rivers Shire and spoke to the council today (moreso because I had the bright idea of trying a few more marks out in the Bay this morning - bloody decent swell for a 6m tinnie, that's for sure - and only caught undersize squire). Anyway, I had them confirm that it's OK to flush outboard from the hose and also to hose the outboard off after washing (with sponge, etc) but boat and trailer has to be done with a bucket. I queried the issue of safety (brakes on trailer, etc) but was advised that buckets only - no hose on trailers. Their best advice - go to my closest car wash.

I've gotta agree with Hi-Yo and SCOTTYGC - using a trigger hose would definately use less water but I suppose the "decision makers" figure that using buckets will put more people off. That said, using the car wash today cost all of $6 using soap and clean water to rinse off. Then it was home to flush the outboard and tidy up on the smaller bits. I scrub the boat down whilst still on the water to clean most of the grime off - that way, it's only really salt that's left behind - easier to clean up after rather than fish guts/blood.

If anyone has any advice contrary, I'd love to find out - I should have asked for written confirmation but I've never been blessed with smarts.

I`ve done some tests at home using both buckets, bucket and hose and hose only, 6 diferent times just to make sure and i found a bucket with suds combined with a rinse with a hose fitted with a trigger is far more efficient(about half as much water) than tryin to rinse with a bucket alone. not only did it do a better job quicker but it used about half the water.(timed by mate with stop watch to get approx litrs )
Maybe the council should do some ground work or field tests before pullin a regulation out of their ar!@#**!

I dont believe we in the redlands are still on level 2, as we follow the bcc water retrictions.

I will still wash boat with the hose, because common sense says you use only half the amount. Think about it, if I have to walk around the boat with a bucket to get rid rid of the suds, now thats alot of water.

If I get fined, well I spose I get fined, but my boat has no streak marks, its clean Im a happy chappy, an in doing so, will be ensuring I do my best to conserve water in the process and use as little as possible.

Bloody councils - ggrrrrr, some common sense would be nice for a change..

    Re: washing boat/outboard

I was down the local boatramp and I was watching these holaday
makers washing and flushing out their boat engines, and they didnt give
a rats a..s about the rules or water they used, but the thing that pissed
me off the most, was all the oil, fuel, sluge, and soapy bubbley crap
that was going striaght down the stormwater drian and into sea.
And Iam sure if I did it, I would be the one that gets a caught and
fined. and how do you rinse the boat with buckets of water and
call it water wise. The councils are full of it!I will take my boat home
and wash it their and take my time and do a good job on it, plus
give the garden a good drink!
The only thing I will be risking is a excess bill from the council.
See you cant win either way!

hey reel magic, have a good read of the bayside bulliton when you get one and you'll find that the redlands have gone independent and have stayed on level 2 restrictions, thats what i read anyway!!!

Off to Mum and Dad for me as they live in Redlands. I have used a watering can before with great success due to the dog eating the hose
We have been very lucky with water as i have worked in places where water was trucked in and cost allot.

read on REdland Shire Council that we can still hose to wash.

We are still at level 2 restrictions here, with water coming from a veyr full dam at the back of Capalaba, and via pipelines form Straddie.

Sounds like a good excuse to buy a rain water tank. Do you guys get subsidised if you do. I assume that council would have no restrictions on using your own water and a 1000lt tank would cover alot of washdowns if done right.

I am lucky myself in some ways, I run the boat on the trailer down the local ramp into the freshwater and kick the motor over after using it in the salt. Gets the salt right out of the trailer as well
Eat well, drink in moderation, exercise often and yet you still die anyway!
