    dolphins in the pine

hey guys, saw a dolphin cruizing down the pine today up past the highway bridge. Is this unusual? I would never imagine it. And then whilst we were watching it go by some *$#% saw it and tried to get a closer look by driving his boat straight over where it had just surfaced. I was so angry woulda thrown rocks at them if they were closer haha.
Interested to see if others have or did see the dolphin further up the pine today.

    Hi Daniel,

Great to see the dolphins heading upstream so far. Its not uncommon for certain species of dolphins to travel up rivers. Species such as Indo-pacific humpback dolphins (small, light grey with a long skinny nose and rounded dorsal fin) live quite happily in rivers. There are a few resident ones usually found at the mouth of the brissy river, but were recently sited up as far as the city reaches.

Can't help over enthusiasm sometimes with regard to the mob trying to get a closer look. I think it really clouds peoples judgement sometimes!

    Cheers

I am not surprised and imagine they would often go into the Pine river. I fish the Brisbane river and seeing dolphins has become quite common over the last couple of years. In fact I was trolling along the sunken wall at pinkenba 2 weeks back in my kayak, and a trio of dolphins accompanied me for about 400 metres getting to within 5 metres of my yak.

Scared the bejesus out of me though when they first surfaced and I heard them exhaling through their blowhole.

Its truly remarkable how the river has cleaned up over the last 5-10 years.

Probably the reason we are seeing Threadfin, Squire and the odd Jack caught commonly whereas in past days the river fished poorly.

And with more fish come the larger predators hence dolphin sightings.

Yeah they do come in every now and then.

The first time I saw one, I was taking a mate from Germany for a fish around Deepwater Bend, when one surfaced right in front of us. Here's me quick surprised and teh German mate is going "Oh a dolphin" like they're a common site around here.

I see dolphins in the Pine most times I'm there, usually one or two together swimming in the main channel.

There's one I see fairly regularly and from the marks and bits missing of his dorsal, it must be a fairly old one

i seen one old bugger right up the southpine near the ramp behind west fields. i think he was lookin' for a free feed. he swam with the boat and when we stopped he circled it! we gave him a feed of pillies. by the way is it ok to feed dolphins? the pillies were fresh!

    cheers

The old one has been there for at least 18 months we see him often he is quite freindly and does look very old. Often up and around the Bald Hills Boat ramp on The South Pine. There is currently a mummy and bubby baby dolphin who hangs around down toward Dohles Rocks.
We are lucky to have them as our nieghbours!
