anyone tried fishing stretch of river to city?

    hi all,

just wondering is anyone has fished the coronation stretch from the Regatta hotel towards the city? im on this side of the river and the opposite site (west end) looks quite fishy especially around the rowing ramps...there's also a couple of stumps that looks like it used to be a jetty?..

has anyone tried out this stretch? im new to this site and am land-based so anyone wanting to try this stretch or any other place likewise , drop me a line.. im keen to get out and fish with or without a fishing buddy..

    cheers all

    nov-rain,

I haven't fished that far up the Brissy River. Though remember seeing an article in Modern Fishing a year or 2 ago that focused on the Brissy River around the City area. In the article it mentioned reasonable catches of bream and lizards. The river should get better over time, since the dredging stopped on 1 Jan 2000. But it tends to have alott of traffic on these days and one would expect that to grow over time, and as the population grows around the city area.

I've always thought about going for a paddle early morning/late arvo under the riverside expressway and toss some SP's at the pilons. There's sure to be some bream hanging on those.

But in the end, I guess we all seek much quieter locations to fish.

I'm a kayak fisho and am interested in going for a fish around the city some day. So let me know if your interested in doing a trip some day?

    Cheers,

    Gigantor

    heya gigantor,

would love to go out fishing with you some day... just let me know when.. thing is i don't own a kayak.

i reckon the pilons would definitely hold fish of some kind esp around the boat ramps too. looks kind of 'mangrovish' to me. maybe some bream and flatties hiding among the pilons?.. a jack too maybe?...

there was a report a couple of weeks ago about fishing under the goodwill bridge. catches were quite good so maybe things are looking up..

i can't PM you cos i need to have at least 10 posts before im allowed to PM..

    cheers

    Howdy,
I was flicking some 2" berkleys under the goodwill bridge (park up the road at the uni) a few Sundays ago and while I was only there on my way to work (45mins - 1hr max) I got a few baby bream and a little slimy catfish. Only once had a great take that felt flatheadish but spat the hook and left me shaking and reaching for the hip flask! Not much to write home about, may've been wrong tide/ moon phase..
Let us know how you go and when you'll be down there and I might come and bolster the numbers?
    Cheers,
    Jim

find somewhere that looks fishy and give it a crack, you'll find the bream will be thick this time of year and there is plenty more around to wet the appetite!

    No wukkas Novo,
Might be a while till I wet a line there, however had a great day out a few weekends ago in the Pine River on a rented dinghy. Out for 3 hours and cost $65 all up (incl. bimini) split 3 ways with some whiting and weird maroon/ white striped fish.
I'l let you know in advance and maybe we can work something out.
    take it easy, speak later.

    Novo,
there is also boat hire at Pinkenbah Boat Ramp and just upriver is the sunken wall.
SUPPOSED to be a bream hangout par excellence. They are slightly dearer in cost but the fishing should make up for it.

Re: anyone tried fishing stretch of river to city?

well i do live on the other side and from what i've fished and from what has been in others' buckets there are brim, whiting, and catfish. I've sat there one night holding on to a number of pillys hoiked about 20m from the bank and got nothing.

There are also mullet and pink striped smallish things. I'm sure flathead would be moving into the areas building up sand. Will be trying every few months.

Probably threadfin salmon cruise up and down there but i've never got round to gathering the right rocks to fish for them (pun - gotta be young and keen to fish for 12 hrs, yikes).

My only concern for that area would be have the fish been ingesting the hundred years of heavy metal pollutants dumped in to that area by the local industry.

I think when i hit 70 or 80 I'll start eating the fish from there cause what builds up in my system won't matter.

Jim bream, I believe the sunken wall is down stream of the Pinkenba ramp, tho I've never fished it. Going by the google pic its downstream, thats the QCL berth at the bottom of page and Caltex to the right.

Upsteam at the city near where you originally wanted to fish there are deep holes on the bend, downstream of the William Jolly bridge, downstream of the Victoria bridge and the Story bridge. Also off the Port Office there is a 3-4m drop off. Try along Kangaroo Pt, both sides or Norman Ck, which is further down.

Don't think there is much around West End, its not deep and there is little structure.

    regards
