Hardb8 sums up my thoughts exactly. But welcome to the "non-bait" world![]()

I wonder what the outcome of a bream comp with one team using
SP's and another using live prawns would be?

If its any consolation Shayned I catch bugger-all with them also
i was in the same boat as you.. i spent all this money on plastics and new outfit.. but still no fish.. but persistence pays off.. just keep trying them.. they do work.. try different techniques.. different plastics.. different jigheads.. the only way to get better is keep practising! get a hold of the berkley's soft plastics DVD.. very helpful and well worth watching if you are keen to catch fish on SP's..
try the berkley's 3" minnows gulps in pumpkinseed.. killer lure for bream!
good luck!
me
10% of people catch 90% of the fish
also what size hooks do you use 3" power baits try size 4 but no bigger than 2. also loose the way you think some days you get nothing and some days you
can have a ball. I have pulled a few nice bream out from under bait fisherman
in the pine riverbut you do need/helps to have right gear but keep going, i thought plastics where a load of bull, but i have not brought bait for over 2 years and my pb is 42cm just over 1kg
can any one go to this webby's "RIVER TO MUD" if so where can i find out more info
I wouldn't suggest a size 4 hook for 3" plastics. The hook won't be exposed at all... A #2 hook is the SMALLEST I use for 3" plastics. Was using 1/0's the other day & caught alot of bream and a few trevally. Match the hook to the bait (Or in this case, SP), not the target species.Originally Posted by alby

Saturday I fished the the hour and a half until dark around the wharves behind Morgans processing sheds without a touch using the new equipment. Tossed around a berkley 3" minnow pinned with a squidgy clear plastic head weighted #2 hook.
Sunday tried a new spot on the pine near castle hill from 9.30am until 12.30pm throwing a 3" pumpkin seed minnow with a 1/16 oz weight #2 hook. Finally had two hits unfortunately I suspect it was just hungry toad fish.
On a brighter note I am getting very proficient at retrieving sp's out of mangrove trees, I only lost one sp on Sunday.
On an even brighter note I now have a great spot for collecting live mullet, I've never seen them so thick. If I had brought the right gear there would have been two of the buggers swimming around with some jewellery hanging off them just as speculators while I perservered with the sp's. Once a bait drowner always a bait drowner, hey?
i use plastics when i start getting bored with catching no fish on bait or when i fell like doing something with my hands and most of the time i will get something. i have only used them around 5-6 times but i would say i have caught a fish just about every time. i do change my technique until i find one that works and once i do it works quite well. i have caught moses perch and flathead on them and IMO i dont think it really matters what brand they are. i usually use a very dark green one from a cheapo bait bucket and it seems to work fine.

You'll get there shayned. thats the right approach...lightest jighead you can get away with. I'm no expert...in fact i havn't got a bream yet, but...everything iv'e seen and read says a slow to practically NO retrieve is the ket to bream on placcy's. just lightly (easliy spooked)drop it in on top of them and if it looks like food, they'll eat it.Originally Posted by shayned
i must get out and have another go at them myself.
cheers, roo
Try the pasage on a run out tide for flathead. Thats how I started and its a good way to build up the confidence that they do actually work.
Just target areas that you think should hold a lizard :drop offs, drain mouths etc.
Im just starting to get into chaseing the squire out the front of Reddy on SP's.
Looking forward to hooking up a on nice squire, so far only unders, sweetlip, small cod, moses perch, tailor, pike etc.
Everything but.
Keep going they DO work, just think like a fish
Shayne - I'll speak to you soon. May have some free time this weekend![]()
