Tomato Cod for mine,this is what I call a Coral Cod.
tomato cod for sure, coral cod, is pretty much like a coral trout
some type of cod.. definately not a coral trout...
looking at the rest of the posts its a tomato cod

It's nice to sort that one out. I seem to have a habit of catching strange fish.
Can anyone suggest a good reference book to keep on the boat that can help ID in situations like this?

Yeah mate there not bad eating, much the same as many cod...
Yeo Tomato Cod - Cephalopholis sonnerati (see here - http://filaman.ifm-geomar.de/Summary...ry.php?id=6454).
Naturally rare - like barramundi cod, so not a common catch.
My personal experience suggests they are excellent eating
grants guide to fishes, 1982, page 211, colour plate has it as a orange rock cod. have caught them off cape moreton . delicious.
