    drifting sandbars for flathead

    Hi
I am just wondering if drifting estuary sandbars is a good way catch flathead.
If you have any tips for me about this topic such as what tackle and gear to use when going about this it would be much appreciate it if you could tell me.

Most flattys you will find come off a sandbank mate. Flattys chase their food on the sandbanks because the stuff thats on the sandbanks its often what they eat (little whiting, bream etc). Most flattys lie around some sort of structure, it might be a weedbed or log etc.

Gear is pretty simple, depends if your using bait or plastics etc but 8lb mono should be fine, ganged pillies, big prawns, poddy mullet, whitebait, frogmouth pillies often work best, Live bait is best.

drifting with bait or casting with lures are the best ways to catch flathead.. flathead are teritorial meaning they might not be taking your lure because they are hungry but just to try and kill what ever it is invading there space... this is why they are easily caught on lures that look nothing like a natural fish

As the previous post said, an outgoing tide is the best bet. I have had some success over the years fishing the spots where a smaller creek enters a bigger creek or river. My theory is that Mr Flathead lies in wait for a smaller fish retreating or eing swept out of the little creek.

Baits are many - anything alive or fresh - yabbies, prawns, pillies, frogmouth pillies, herring, etc. These days many people are using soft plastics. I have not had much success with SPs to date, but I will keep trying.
