Don't let the flash boats and top of the range gear intimidate you! You are exactly right in that you only need a livewell and safety gear.
Of course there are a lot of guys who fish ABT comps that are sponsored and have the stuff the rest of us dream of - but doesn't mean they can fish!
If you enter as a non-boater there is an even chance you will end up fishing out of a $30,000+ boat anyway! I am yet to do it, but most guys say they learn alot from their boaters too.
But I think the general boat outlines are minimun 3.9metres, minimum 20hp, but must be able to plane with two anglers, gear and full livewell. The livewell must be insulated and re-circulating (no nally bins) and a minimum of 60lt. So you cab use the big Evercool style eskys with those Johnson bait pump kits. I think you'll find most of the boats are the bass boat styles as they perform the tasks perfectly. My little Hornet looked like it was the smallest in the field at last weeks ABT comp. But all that means is that I get to my spots a little slower than the Nitros, Skeeters and Pro-Strike type boats. I still caught fish and Ian K who was my non-boater on day one went on to finish second in his division, so boat size doesn't catch more fish, angler skill does.
As far as rods and reels go, I use Struddy Sic sticks and Pflueger Trions with Daiwa Freams and Capricorns. These are plenty good enough for me and a lot of guys use rods and reels worth less than these, and again in my opinion it all comes down to angler skill not how many dollars you are holding in your hand.
Basically, get out there and have a go, at worst you'll have a great day and learn some new techniques, at best you could catch some fish too and win some $$ or prizes.
If you have any more questions just post them up, we breamers will be more than happy to help you out.
Hi Guys,
when I started fishing the BREAM's when they started, I used Procaster S (now Procyon) rods and regal s reels, caught fish, had fun. But the enivitable upgrade bug hit and now I fish Procaster V & Z's and Heartland, but fitted with Kastor reels. Any mid level gear these days will suffice, just make sure the reel has a GOOD drag and spool up with spectra type lines and flurocarbon leaders.
As to the boat, I have fished 6 seasons of Bass and 4 Bream in a 3.7 pointy punt and 20hp, but made sure I had a good livewell system. Again the upgrade came about and this season in a custom 4.8 glassie with 90hp, and as of last weekend, finally had measurer fish onboard. Lookin forward to Clarence and Tweed rounds. Met Fishin Dan at the Goldie, top bloke.

Hey
Has anyone been fishing the tweed recently? hows it doing?
I've never really fishd the tweed and have no idea of what to expect during this comp.. Is it mostly canals like the gold coast or totally different?
LOL
Does the tweed produce better quality bream than the gold coast?...maybe not for u mick but anyone else?
I looked in the refidex and the tweed looks a pretty big system.. I cant wait till the comp! Getting a new rod soon aswell
Nabs - the Tweed is home of the undersized bream - for us from Queensland anyway. Don't forget you will be fishing NSW waters and the legal limit for the comp is 25cm to the fork. Last year I fished day 2 with Steve Morgan, we fished way up the river and I used hardbodies for the first time, all up I ended up with about 12 fish , would have easily got a QLD bag but didn't end up getting any NSW legal fish
Hey Mick, I'll give you a call when I go down, won't be this week as the electrics gone up for repairs (auto pilot is doing 360's), but I want to get a couple of early morning before work sessions in before the pre-fish bans kick in, we might be able to meet up. Did you end up entering the upcoming STC round?
As for fishing the Tweed before the comp, I,m down to once a week fishing now as our baby sitter has left us and is getting ready to have her own baby, she really should have considered my fishing first !
Can't fish this Friday as I will be on the way to The Clarence comp, the next week I think I can fish the friday and then the Sunday social .
Then, the next week I'll be back in Yamba for school Hols, trying to get a Jewy on plastics.
That only gives me a couple of days at the Tweed before the comp.
And I think I relly need all the prefishing I can get.
Mick just do what I am going to do, that is trust my boater to know where the fish are oops I forgot your fishing as a boater Good luck with your prefishing, I will also be down there on friday the 23rd for a prefish with Fishin_Dan. See you friday night at the briefing.
Cheers Ian
