Also seems to be more UV resistant. That is it keeps its as new breaking strain for longer.

The pro's are my young fella last november 30lb Gorilla Braid, first Barramundi at Peter Faust Dam 116cm 22.5kg. Set himself a benchmark that will be hard to beat for the rest of his life.

As I mentioned above I'm a braid fan. However, whenever I'm using braid I always use a mono leader. Braid as terminal line is hopeless as it has no abrasion resistance and the lack of stretch can cause you to pull the hooks out of the fish.

I now exclusively use Harro's Bionic Braid. I've tried a number of others but keeping coming back to this pink braid. I use 30 lb in shore and 50 lb offshore. My leader is usually about 1 - 1.5 m of 50 or 60 lb mono. This give great abrasion resistance and acts like a bit of shock absorber at the end.

Was a braid fan till i started losing to many good fish from hooks dropping out of mouths in choppy weather. No stretch hooked up and the boat suddenly drops down a wave you lose all pressure on fish and lose the fish. Have gone back to mono and dont have the problem anymore and seem to catch more fish overall anyway. Still use braid for some trolling applications and bottom bashing only if the current is roaring and cant hold bottom with mono. I try to use mono as much as possible.

Braid on the lure rigs. Both estuary and Freshwater impoundments. Combined with good flurocarbon leader or in the case of Impoundments. 50lb braid with Jack Erskine type leader (60 or 80LB Penn10x with Halco 6 Coastal snap) and still smashed to hell by at least two big fish on the last trip to Awoonga.
Braid 6 to 10lb with mono or fluro leaders for the estuary work. In touch with you lure at all times.
    Helps to feel the bite.
With all the rigs though we use mono for the grandchildren and for those starting out. Braid can cut, but so can your knife. As with all things commonsense is what is required.
My recommendation for all those that have not tried braid. Is you don't know what your missing. Go and talk to your local tackle shop and get some good advice.
However you do need better quality rods and reels to go with the braid. Anyway thats what I told the other half.
Seems like once she caught a couple of Barra on Braid over the 110cm she is now hooked. Guess i'm in the good books for awhile.

People say that with braid they loose fish cause theres no stretch in the line and they pull hooks, you need to set up the rig better, a good rod and set the drag right with braid and I have found its streets ahead.

I find it curious that nobody has mentioned Soft Plastics to the equation

As soon as you mention Soft Plastics, my choice is braid without a doubt.

There's no way I would use mono when using SP's simply because SP's work best without a swivel - a swivel affects the way the SP presents as a lure, and I have found the fish don't bite on SP's when there's a swivel used. If you try fish SP's with mono line and no swivel, the dreaded grapes and line twist become intolerable.

The braid will also outlast mono 10x the distance in terms of shelf life. I still have braid on my spools that's now 2 years old. Mono will become brittle with age because of U/V.

The cons of braid are that you lose shock absorbancy, so 3 ways you can compensate for that are: 1. Use longer leader material 2. lighten the drag on your reel 3. use softer action rods that will "load up" but still have some grunt for species like snapper.

You will also need the better quality jig heads, as I have found the hooks will bend more easily than using mono, but it's a balance between this and trying to add some shock absorbancy. As Cheech described in a recent post, he loosens the grip of the rod when playing big snapper to try take some of the shock from their headshakes into his hand and arm.

Re: Pro's and con's of braid

Hi there all. This is my first post on this forum, but here's my two bobs worth on braid. For lure tossing or trolling (fresh or salt) braids the go but rods need to be a lttle softer than normal and hooks have to be the best you can buy. Terminal tackle has to be good. Some form of good mono leader as well. You will find head shakers do a fair bit of damage to themselves aroung the hook entry point, and this is why many fish are lost I believe. Wide gape hooks are good in this respect as they tend to stay in much longer. When bait fishing with braid if you can feel what the fish is doing he can probably feel what your doing. Whiting and bream are prime examples. Deep water bait fishing braid is the way to go because of the less belly in the line and more feel. Again consider using wide gape hooks to hang in there a bit longer. For macks and similar I prefer good mono as when they change direction quickly and you get slack in the braided line the hooks often drop out. Mono with its mile of stretch gives you more time to catch up with them and stay connected. Cheers all. I'm going fishing.
