    soaking 'no name' soft plastics

    hi all,

just wanted to know if anyone has tried this before - instead of buying brand names like gulp or berkley, has anyone thought of or tried soaking no name plastics in a fish oil solution or similar to give them the scent?

was thinking about it the other day and i reckon if it works, everyone here would save heaps cos no name plastics cos way cheaper than the branded ones...the fish oil or whatever solution u soak in it would be absorbed by the plastics somewhat.. although i have to say it won't be as strong as the brand name ones.

anyone given this a go before?

    cheers

I havent given it a try but it is not a bad thought. Maybe instead of soaking them in the oil it might be an idea to use the berkley scent that they put out now. I think it might be worth a little experimenting if we can still catch fish on them and save a little money at the same time. Would be interesting to hear from more experienced sp fisho's to learn more.

Making hybrid SP's is simple idea that a few Bream fishermen do by just leaving 2 different colours together for a week or so & then soaking them in Gulp! juice..

Using 'no name' SP's to save money is great idea but if the swimming action is poor & your getting bad results on them i would be straight back to using the dearer SP's that catch me fish!

I just spray my Sp's with fish attractant but I have heard of people using spray on cooking oil with garlic in it dont know how well it works though never tried it .

I was thinking it may be an idea to use a syringe and inject some taste into a plastic, that way it may last a little longer than just a dip. One of these days i'll get round to doing it.

    It works.
I habe found (from observation more than success ) that its more in the techniquw than the brand of SP.

Agree AngiG, but i also save all my old gulp packets and when empty reload them with the cheaper plastics that don't have sent.. sometimes i do use the spray attractent but i am not sure on how good they are sometimes i get a hit first cast after spraying, sometimes it dosn't seam to make a difference! you need to take a heap of different things into account when trying to figure out plastics been hooked on plastics for 2.5 years now and am still learning something new every trip.

didn't know berkley sold the scent by itself.. but i reckon with a bit of clever experimenting on our side, someone will be able to find a cheaper and more feasible alternative.

oddbudman's idea of injecting them might work ... prob keeps the scent on the plastic for longer. im not quite sure of the difference in swimming sction btwn the branded plastics and the no name ones cos i haven't really tried soft plastics a lot but from what i have seen and how they look, they all look the same to me... its just the same as buying a t-shirt from kmart and buying a t-shirt from calvinklein. they look and feel good but does the same purpose.

what about the halco scents that are grease based which stays on longer.? and as for sps i buy them from a place in bundy for an example for 50 2inch grubs any colour $ 4.00 . they are delivered the next day . there jig heads are about 1/3 of usual priced brand names, they have all colours, all sizes , and all types, of sps. worth a look .

Hubby if you dont mind telling us, who do you get them through. At those sorts of prices it would be well and truely worth paying the postage to Redcliffe or even driving up for a weekend and wetting a line up there.

Just as a matter if interest what makes you think these scented sp's actually smell to a fish after the 4th or 5th cast has washed off the scent on the outside?

Re: soaking 'no name' soft plastics

the scent attractants seem to hold some credibility but i am a firm believer that the action you put on the sp is more important. fish have a lateral line that runs down either side of there bodys. this works like a antenna picking up the vibrations caused by fleeing or injured baitfish etc. the better action on the sp = more vibrations in the water = more attention from predators = more fish looking for what is causing there lateral line to react. my point here is that maybe the cheaper sp's wont deliever as good an action as the brand names. as for the scents, how many bait fish smell like garlic?. how many baitfish smell like rotten fish ?. how many baitfish give off distinctive scents ?. i have used the gulps etc and still have many unopened packs in the boat, but i went back to the known brand sp's and my hookup rate improved. this is a huge subject and everyone has their theories, most of which hold some truth. if you guys have success with the added smell on the no namers i would love to hear about it, as im sure many other plastic junkies would also. the costs of the bloody things soon adds up. in the past 12 mths i have spent well over $800 on the bloody things !!!. i have a good selection but it has to stop somewhere. a cheaper alternative must be out here somewhere. looking forward to your reports on the experiments. cheers Maxi

It is interesting to read everyone's views on SP's. I really believe that the most important thing is believing in what you are using. If you are not sure of something or don't think that it will work then it probably won't. The power of positivity does play a part.

There is so much involved in using SP's successfully - scents ......... actions ........ believing in them ...... holding your mouth right.

Give me a good quality SP with a nice action over a poor quality no action but smelly SP.
IMO the action and placcie size is far more important than wether it has any "smell" or not.
Dont get me wrong Gulps are great as they have some pretty good action in the tails but some of the other scented SP's leave alot to be desired.
Im not saying you have to spend big bucks on SP's i have some from Rum city lures on Ebay which were very cheap. The action is great and they catch plenty of fish. They do smell....Like melted plastic hardly an attractive scent!
