    Using eels for bait

For chasing bull sharks, what is the best way to use eel? Bait size, rigging method ect. Thanks in advance.

Shayne, I use 2 x 10/0 Gamakatsu rigged to wire in tandem, with the drop to the bottom hook according to bait size. I take off the head and take out the back bone, lay the hooks along the length of the bait in the middle and close one flap over the other with the barb protruding through the flesh. I then bind it closed with elasticated cotton.

Are you then turning the eel inside out with the flesh on the out side? Do you just cut sections of eel to use or try with a whole eel, some I've caught get to a fair size.

Depends on the size of the eel but no, I do not turn 'em inside out.....the cut at the head lets out enough juice. If it's a big eel, I may only use one half fillet and roll it round the tandem. You can also try a cocktail of mullet fillet and eel.....place the mullet on the inside of the eel fillet (both same size or use two mullet fillets so that they are showing at each end to leech juices.....something like the onion inside a rollmoop herring. I get a better hook up rate with shorter lengths which is why I tandem hook the longer lengths.......you don't know which end they're going to hit so a hook at each end is best.

These are pike eel? Any tips on handling them?

They look pretty agressive when Ive caught em, so I just cut the line. What should I do next time? Weve got bullies around the coomera, its about time I gave em a go.

    cheers

Any eels mate, but pike eels are more readily caught in my neck of the woods. Yes, they're vicious buggers and they don't let go once they latch on "Pine Pit Bulls" I call 'em. Carry a wet hessian sack drop 'em in (if they'll let you" and cut the line........they go quiet in the dark. Don't know the reason for it but I've found with any eel that if you can 4x2 em on the tail, that knocks 'em out more than cutting their spine. Thought it was an old wive's tale when an old timer told me years ago but I've used that method since and it seems to work.

I can't stress enough that you must treat 'em with respect........if they drop on the floor of the tinny lift your feet.

Newspaper for some reason gets a good grip on them. Kingtin's right though they tend to stay angry for a long time and the buggers are quick!!!!!!
