a rod 3,4 metrrs long5,8 kilo main line with a lighter leader of 3,4 kiloquill float hooks should be size 6, 10. Bait needs to be fine stranded algae, sea cabbage and lettucepeeled prawn flesh may also catch u ones after rough seas conjevoi will often be taken i have also seen them caught on the white of hard boiled eggs. But cutting the egg white in to cubes and putting it on ur hook is quite difficult any way hope that helped

nice long whippy rod(not manadatory though) I use a 42144, light line, 6 8lb estuary 12-15lb ocean rocks, quil lfloat or whichever best suits the conditions. If ur fishing a spot that still has a little swell or runs fast a float wit ha little more ballast, but quiet still estuaries use the lightest quill u can get... rig it with a running system is easiest t ocast if ur learning, get the squeeze on float stops... just use enough weight for the tip of the quil lto sit just out of the water, but again conditions will determine how much float u need exposed... I use a two hook rig but a lot of guys up here just use 1..y I dont know as I have caught numerous double headers..mainly budgewoi lake
rig each hook on its own trace with both traces different lengths....
use the green snell hooks, 6 8 sizes....
then the bait thats a whole different topic and up here in sunny QLD for me is harder than catching the fish LOL
gree nweed black weed brown weed.. soft wire ... cabbage etc are all good baits and will depend on the location and time of year ur fishing for them...
kope that helps any more Questions fire away... yes I luv my luderick fishing
fish boy where abouts r u going to have a crack at them ??
Hey fishboy,
Many years ago i read a modern fishing article on the "cloak and dagger squad", cannot remember the old guys name who wrote it ... It was about catching jewies of the beach, but i reckon luderick fishing is the same.
If you want to catch these suckers, you need to become one of the society, to squad.
Masterdusky is one of them, the bait, the gear, the tide, the moon, the sea, the precisley weighted float, the thrill of catching one of these cagey buggers. I applaud their patience, i gave up after a few goes, to go catch something easier!!!
Look listen and learn. Nothing pulls harder on light gear than an angry ... blackfish. The above posts will help, but time will be your best tool.
Make sure to post some pics when you catch one.

Thanks guys ... first post. Just moved to the top of Budgewoi Lake, and some of these hints have been valuable.
Coming from WA, where every fish eats REAL bait, I can see this is going to be a fairly steep learning curve ... but one that I think I'll need to research exhaustively ...!

Noel is spot on your best bet is to find a old bugger fishing for them watch for a looooooong time a ask a question or 2, if you patient and show real interest they tell you a tip or 2. Good nigger fisherman are a dying bread and it really is an art to do properly, great fun though!

Alcohol doesn't agree with me, but i sure do enjoy the argument!!!
Didnt think there was any decent blackfish in the lake except maybe at the mouth near the bridge at Warilla.Use to catch some horse blackfish and drummer at Bass Point though.Often collected weed baits from the lake though for a days fishing at the rocks.Use to use green weed, sea cabbage and occasionally peeled prawn. When fishing for blackies it is pretty important to berley. All you need is a bucket of sand, stale bread and weed.By wetting the bread, sand and weed the sand will be impregnated in the bread and weed which helps it sink rather than float. So you grab a handle full clump it into a ball in your hands and throw it into the swell were you are fishing(where your float will be).Always fished under a float adjusting depth of trace to water depth you are fishing in.

15lb line float stppers float 7 split shot to swivel then 6 lb traceto b.f. hook hair weed lots of burley chopped in sand if fishing under trees in river found light wire to work well stopps them cutting you off will need to change wire reg though as it twists up coop
Only ever caught one. It was an awsome sight, It was getting dark, And they were extremely thick in one spot sort of staying around the surface making small boils.. Who knows what they were doing it was pretty weird. Thought they were trevally or somthing. Flicked my little sinking bream minnow in and got a few taps (not sure if they were having a go or they were just so thick that i was fouling them) after about 10 casts i blindly hooked one through the back on the surface, a good fight.... went 27cm.
